629-2 Mystery

What do I have here? Clearly marked 629-2 yet I cannot find any reference in SCSW to one so marked in 3" RB. Serial Number (BBW) places it in late 88 - early 89 yet the Lew Horton run of 3 inch "Combat Magnums" marked 629-1 were years earlier (1985). Engraving is good but not remarkable quality so I suspect non factory. Can someone help solve this mystery? Any guess at value? Thanks...

Clearly it deserves to be lettered. that would remove the guess work. As to value I would guess at $ 1500 - $ 2000 maybe as low as $1250 since no box is shown or mentioned.

1sg, That is a beautiful revolver. That is definately a BBQ GUN!!!! in my opinion ( Who cares if the engraving is factory or not) It still looks great. If you are happy with it, WHICH I WOULD BE...carry it shoot it or just look at it...

SG ,the standard rule of thumb with Smith and Wesson applies just more so with the 629s' .

There is no rule of thumb.

Your gun could have been a run of 500 or more for Camfour ,or R.S.R. or any of the large distributors
in the late 80s'.

I have a 629-5 P.C. gun that isn't mentioned anywhere. Just happens.

Now ,,how about some clear close ups of your 629. How did you acquire it?? Hmmm?

I had a -2E from the same period that was a standard production gun.

Interesting; I just assumed S&W would have applied some logical, systematic and sequence-base process; guess not huh? Anyway here's another pic. Purchased this from a former gunshop owner; it was his personal firearm no box, papers or tools. It's been shot but certainly not abused. It's a bit too flamboyant for me. I haven't decided yet but am considering selling. So, what do you think is a fair asking price? Thanks...

To answer your value question, it would be helpful to know who did the engraving. Does the previous owner know the history?
You should also put the appropriate grips on the gun that jives with the engraving.

The gun looks nice and I like 629's but I wouldn't pay a premium for an engraved gun with no history.

Appreciate the feedback. I have no idea who did the engraving; it's unsigned. Could it be factory? These are purportedly the original grips; what type would be more "appropriate"? Thanks...

IMO it is not factory.
Those grips are too new for that gun. A engraved gun has a "border" around the top edge of the grip.
Your grips are hiding engraving underneath (which is not proper)

If you remove the grips and look closely, you might see the engravers name or initials.

Also look for hidden initials in the engraving somewhere.
