About two weeks ago, I saw on their website that a local gun shop had a 2 1/2" 686 in what looked like near new condition. I have an ANIB 2 1/2" 686-2, but I had a little money and thought I would drop by and take a look. I took a look at it as soon as I got there and determined it was a -2 like I already have and was not in near the condition as the one I have, especially the factory combat grips. Oh well, that's the way it goes . . .

I was about ready to leave when I spotted a large frame stainless S&W with a long narrow barrel that was not yet on their website. I checked it out and it turned out to be a lovely 624 in near new condition with beautiful original (dated Jan 1985) target grips. I was concerned about whether it had passed the recall inspection (Info on Cylinder Recall) so I asked if I could see the box. They brought out the original box with all the original paperwork. The label had the red "C" in a cirle indicating it had been inspected at the factory and passed. I bought it and I'm very happy. You can see why below . . .

I'm very pleased with the grips . . .

It even has the factory sticker still on it . . .

Day at the range:

Oh man! A stainless N frame in like new condition with drop-dead targets on it!?!

I'd be happy too! Nice revolver.

That profile with the partial underlug (the ejector rod only being covered) is the best ever IMHO.

Congratulations!!

That is a very nice example that you bought. I'll be waiting patiently until you grow tired of it.

Denver Dick;
You are a very fortunate fellow, indeed! I LOVE my 624's. They are shooting machines!!

My most used load in the 624's is the "Skeeter load" (7.5 grs of Unique behind a 240-250 gr Keith bullet).

Congratulations!

Denver Dick: Nice buy! Seeing you're in Ventura County,I have to ask: Did you find it at "G.G." perhaps? If so, I looked at it the same day I bought my 4" Model 24-3 there!

Dick, I'm in Ca. (Sac.) and if you don't mind, what'd it cost you? I like to get e reference point on prices here in California. Good going BTW, whatever it cost.

The one I saw (might be the same) was going for $600.00 about two weeks ago!

Pulicords: You should have bought it for $600.00 because when I bought it on May 18 it was marked $650.00. I tried to get Chris and company to come down a bit but, although he sometimes drops prices for me, the answer on this one was no. Oh, by the way Pulicords, on Thursday the 28th, when I picked up the 624, they had a very nice 4" 57-1 without a box. It had just come in and had not yet been priced. I didn't even ask because I refuse to get into a new caliber. But . . . the timing and carry up were perfect . . . oh well, I'm sticking to my guns - no new caliber!

By the way, it'll be going through its paces tomorrow morning at around 10 a.m. at the Firing Line in Northridge.

You guys are giving me flashbacks...I worked LAPD Devonshire Patrol and later Narcotics and used to "goof off" shooting on duty at the Firing Line in Northridge. A very nice 624, by the way!

I might be wrong on the price, but I was in a kind of spending spree! (In addition to the Model 24-3, I bought a Colt Diamondback 4" .22, and a High Standard Supermatic Citation 5" there too! .) They had waaaaay too much nice stuff as "used" or on consignment that week for me to deal with! The original Model 24 (1950) 6.5" .44 was too rich for my tastes in revolvers, even though it came with the box, letter etc...and when I picked up my Model 24-3 (last Tuesday), they had a nice 6.5" Model 29-3 too. (So many nice guns, so little cash! )

Enjoy your time at the Firing Line (my dad worked there and at the Burbank location a few years back)!

OIF2: Having worked as a LEO for a few years in the "Valley" and 25+ for another local "outside agency", you didn't fool me for a second! Everyone knew those Devonshire guys were always goofing off!!!!

You got a steal on that 624. They are awesome revolvers and highly desirable. Congrats!
