i just bought a 629-5 Classis DX on autobroker.com and when you shake it, it rattles.
seems like something is loose under the sideplate. however it cocks and cycles perfectly...and the trigger drops perfectly in both double and single action.
if you tip it up and down it sounds like some small thing is sliding back and forth and making a metallic metal on metal sound almost as if it were tiny ball berings sliding up and down and bumping into something else metalic....
i have never owned a smith before and do not know if this is normal....
any comments ?

That's the sound coming from the floating hammer block. Normal!

No, my 629 does not rattle, it's an older 629, maybe some design changes in the newer models allow the hammer block to float around some.

Hammer blocks are the same.
Sounds like you need to clean the innards of your gun, too much oil or grease.

Nope no rattles, expect the sometimes the wing nut on the operating end gets rattled and muffs it up.

If they dont rattle there is a tad too much oil in there.
When I buy a used smith and it doesn't rattle, I know I will be pulling the side plate and doing a detail cleaning.

So a little rattle is good?

I can't quite figure out where mine is coming from, but DAMN, trigger feels so good. Gun can't be wrong. I'm not wild about jingle inside a gun, thought. Will shoot tomorrow.

The hammer block has been present in Smiths for a long time now, regardless of where the hammer nose/firing pin is mounted. Frame mounted firing pins are spring loaded and not prone to rattling.

The only currently produced S&Ws without the hammer block I am aware of are the "hammerless" (enclosed hammer) Centennial style J-frame revolvers.

Attached is a photo of a completely disassembled 66-2 (with hammer mounted firing pin). The hammer block is marked with the arrow.

Remember back in the day when auto production workers would hide stuff in autos that would rattle and drive the new owner crazy as well as the dealership mechanics?

We found a steel beer can in the guts of a Pacer. Only steel that wasn't rusted on the whole car.
