Hi All,
If this has been covered before, please point me in the right direction.
I'm wondering if there's any issues using .22 shorts or CCI shotshells in my K-17 revolver - will it damage the forcing cone, cylinder or other parts?
Thanks - just looking for a sanity check before the war on squirrels escalates.

No problem at all in shooting .22 shorts or .22 shotshells in your .22 LR revolver chambers. Just be sure to thoroughly brush out the chambers and bore using bristle brush and solvent before you fire .22 LR. Firing residue from the sorter cases can make for difficult extraction with the .22 LR.
As for the value of .22 shotshells, I would not use them on anything more vigourous than cockroaches or mice at 5 feet distance.

I sometimes use CCI CB shorts in my M-18; after use they make it hard to load LR rounds for one or two re-loadings. No real problem....

Interested in hearing about the "shotshells" results. I wish they were made in .22 short as I've got some rabbits eating the Foundation Plants and some of the Garden. I might be OK with, and safe with, some Short Shotshells but they don't make them, I don't think.

ctkenc - the shotshells are of the LR variety, I've not seen them in shorts.
FWIW - the CB/Target shorts would probably do you better than the shotshells against the rabbits.
I've found the shotshells are louder and have a more limited effective range than CB/target shorts. Also, CCI lists CB short & longs to have the same velocity making me think the only difference is the shell casing.
Good luck,
Sporcket

.22 shotshells are so in-effective they will not penetrate an aluminum can at 10 feet.
.22 CB shorts, on the other hand, are great at shooting squirrels or other vermin when low noise is required (like in your back yard). Pretty good out to 25 yards. I keep some around to dispatch small animals (still alive) that have been hit by cars in front of my house, small ones like rabbits and squirrels.
My wife is a pastor, and is struggling with what to do about a family of squirrels that have taken up residence in the attic and belfry of the church. I know an effective way, but it involves the pastors husband hanging around the church at dusk with a .22 rifle...

+1 on the effectiveness of .22 shotshells. I've shot all of them and I think the first one to be effective at anything beyond striking distance of a snake is the .38/357, the .45 Colt is much better. I made some for the .500 Mag that were pretty potent but messy. Don

I have used the .22 LR shotshells on running gophers in my dads backyard with great success. I was taking my shots at about 10-15 feet, and each one died instantly. I was using a Ruger Single Six with a 5 1/2" barrel. Much beyond that and the shot spreads out too much to be effective.
They are also great fun to use on flying dragonflies. They can be hard to hit while dodging back and forth like they do.

22 LR "rat shot" will kill a flying bird. Don't ask how I know. They will also break the extractor on a semi-auto rifle.

That might prove to be a good training drill.

I think a .500 BLANK will kill a squirrel, or at least motivate him to move to some other neighborhood.
