Checking in with the local pawn shop, the newest bargin that caught my attention was a 28-3 that appeared unfired...or nearly so. 4 inch barrel with box and papers...but priced at $825. I thought prices went down in a recession?? He indicated he would do $700 for a straight cash deal...but still, isn't that a litte rich for a mod 28...even in like new condition?? Have N frames jumped in price and I missed it??

N frames ( and everything else) have jumped up, but I think that one blasted off . . . sounds like somebody just hoping to cash in on the panic.

If you really really want it...you only have to justify it to yourself. No one else matters.

I don't think the -3 was even pinned and recessed. Way off on price - or timing...

That seems very high and would still be very high for a mint 28-2 with box, paperwork and tools.
I bought a 27-2 5 inch nickle gun unfired in the presentation case with tools and paperwork last month for $725 and the 27's go for more the the 28's.

That does seem on the high side even for the much coveted 4". I am recommending that you keep your eyes open for a better deal down the road.

The 28-3 was only made for 4 years, and at a time when the L frames were taking over. I don't know how many -3s were made, but I'm guessing that it is not a large number.
Having said all that, I'd pass at $700. There are other guns that I want more. $600 would be tempting though, if I collected 28s, which I don't (can't have everything). If I were looking for a shooter, I'd pass at anything over $450.
YMMV

I just saw one at my local shop for $800 too. I thought it was too high too.

I'd offer 650 cash and see where that takes you. I do not think that 700 is out of the ballpark in the current market for N frames.

I agree, the price is hi, for the time being.
I thought I paid too much for a mint 28-2 6" a few years ago. ($ 350). It is recessed but NOT pinned...made during the change from 28-2 to
28-3.
They didn't make too many -3's. Might be a good one to keep in your sights, if they would drop another hundred bucks.

I can still find nice 28-2's for under $500, even $400 around here

I passed on a 4" at a gun show a couple of weeks ago for $400 because it had Goodyears on it and some finish issues. I wouldn't mind paying that and more, but it has to be in pretty good shape and sporting decent wood.
