On the 627 v-comp: Is the bore size .355 as it should be. I have heard that smith uses the same barrel on the 357 and 38 super. That would give the super .357 which is too big. Also twist rate? Thanks

Do you mean the 627-4? I never actually slugged mine before I got rid of it, but mine would cause cast bullets of all diameters to hit sideways at about 6 feet. I suspect the gun had .355" cylinder throats with a .357" barrel, as I don't know what else would've caused this problem. It did shoot jacketed and plated bullets very well though. If it does have a .357" barrel, the best thing to do would be to open the cylinder throats to .358" and load .357" bullets into the Super brass. I heard the cylinders are very hard and difficult to machine, so I simply got rid of mine. There are lots of competitive shooters who don't care if these guns don't shoot cast bullets and are eager to buy them. I talked to other shooters at the matches who had this same revolver and many of them complained bitterly about the overall quality of this gun, considering it is a PC item. And I did hear that the bore dimensions varied from one gun to the next, so you'd have to slug the bore of any individual specimen just to be sure.

Thanks Dave: That kind of confirms what I have heard. Like to get the 38 super because I shoot that calibur in my 2011. With the problem will most likely pick the other one though.

The ANSI/SAAMI booklet Z299.3-1993 lists the barrel bore diameter at .346 inches while the barrel groove diameter is .355 inches and the bullet diameter is .356 inches.

Not sure if that helps any...probably no way of really answering the question short of slugging the barrel and checking the cylinder throats.

I'd love to have one of the .38 Super revolvers since I load so much of it for Open....but I don't like the price they're at now! R,

I found that my 627-4 usually would not chamber brass that had been fired through the autos, especially if it had been previously loaded to Major. If you want one of these as a companion to your auto, you'll need to get new brass and keep it all segregated.

+1 on the dedicated brass.

There are 4 of these guns in my circle of shooters and none of them has shown the problem you speak of. They all shoot just fine.

I have been using .355 9mm lead bulletts with great success.

The Lee/EGW U-die should cure that problem. Same thing can be said of my Smith 610. While it may not be as tight as the 627-4, it's pretty tight. Run the cases through the U-die and they drop right in with no problem at all. R
