Anyone have a recomendation for belt holsters for a 4" full lug N frame? Something fairly thin, high riding and close to the body. For range use mostly of course, but the 625 is going to be my do-it-all gun, and if CC is needed I will just have to dress as required. Since I am paying more than I wanted for the 625JM I need to get something in kydex.

Do any of the 625 owners use the Ranch Products 1/3 moon clips? They look like a good way to carry ACP reloads with less bulk. Just curious, once I get the gun I plan to order some to try unless someone reports problems with them.

I just bought a DeSantis belt scabbard holster for my new 4" 629 and love it. It is well made and rides fairly high. It does have a thumb snap but you can get the same holster without it if you like. Here's a link to the place I bought it from. $45 plus shipping. I had it in two days from this vender. I've bought from them several times with good results.

You may want to consider the Hume JIT slide for around $24. I tend to use them more and more when carrying on the belt and I have the proverbial box full of holsters like most everyone. www.donhume.com

For the range, RIMZ is the only moonclip in my opinion. Not the option you'd want if you were looking to carry extra ammo for defense.

I have a Blade-Tech OWB holster that fits the gun just fine but the belt attachment is way too competition oriented (guns sets too far out from the belt for concealment or even daily carry). I'm considering getting one of their Tech-Lock attachment thing but I'm not encouraged. I know of several people who have had the plastic fail on the Tech-Locks.

I bought a bunch of the 1/3 clips from Ranch Products thinking it would be a great way to carry ammo in belt loops but to quickly load two rounds at a time. That works pretty well but then you have to get the empties out of those tiny clips. Pliers were the only thing that worked for me and it was both difficult to do and hard on the thin metal clips. Full moon clips are really the way to go for 45 ACP revolvers.

My preference for a 4 " N frame is the good old Threepersons holster or one of the near clones by Bianchi (5BHL) still made or Safariland (no longer listed). They carry fairly high without getting top heavy.
As for the 1/3 moon clips either they or the half moon allow you to carry a reload in your pocket without looking like a Viagra ad. There are DeSantis 2x2x2 pouches designed for fairly discrete carry on a belt (they look like small cell phone cases with no bullets or brass showing) and as luck would have it the 44 mag version works real well with 6 45ACP rounds in 1/3 moon clips.

Check out LoboGunleather, you'll wait a few weeks but his prices are very reasonable for a custom built holster, and spending just a few bucks more on a good holster is cheaper in the long run than buying 2, 3 or more cheap holsters that don't do the job as well.

I have one of these on order for my 627 Pro:

Not kydex, I know, but thought I'd share anyway.

And I can second the recommendation for Lobo. Ray made a IWB clib for my BG38 and it came out sweet.

I would not even mess with 1/3 moon clips. Full moon are the best choice for a reload but are a little "fat". If your gun will fire rounds reliably without the clips then try some "speed strips".

I bought a Bianchi 111 Cyclone years ago for a 629 Mountain Gun. The Mountain Gun is long gone but the Bianchi 111 now carries my Model 27. It is one rugged holster that will last. I also like the fact it can be carried cross draw which I like for fishing and camping carry. I always think about saving some hard earned money also after a revolver purchase but I have found a good S&W revolver deserves a extra $30 or so for good leather. One exception may be a stainless J frame but I am not completely convinced.

Where on earth do you get "good leather" for $30. The good stuff is more like $75 to $100. Just look at the prices for Lobo or Milt Sparks. $30 won't buy a decent custom belt these days.

He's saying 30$ more than Kydex, not 30$ Total. Well worth it IMHO.

Ryan made my IWB holster for my 629 PC Snub, love the holster.

Another vote for Lobo Gun Leather. His prices are awesome for a custom leather holster & his wait time is very short, especially compared to other holster makers.

I've heard a lot of good things about Simply Rugged holsters. Their Sourdough Pancake holster is next on my list of holsters. Will need one for a soon to be mine 629 5"er. They offer a lot of custom options too.

I've also been admiring the Mernickle PS6-DA for high ride OWB carry. It sure looks sweet.

I carry my 625 Mountain Guns in a Simply Rugged Sourdough and have for the last year and a half or so. It is pretty versatile because you can wear it as a strong side or cross draw pancake holster or use the IWB straps. It is well made and comfortable. You will pay a bit more than for a Kydex holster, but I think it is worth it.
