Anyone know what the year of manufacture would be on a model 586, serial #AEL6xxx? I called S&W and they said it was made before "the fire" and couldn't give me an exact time. Thanks

BS. Mine is AJY46xx and it's a 1985 gun. '84, or '85 sounds right.

Gentlemen,
This is what S&W told me: "The original 586 was made from 1980 to 1999. They had a fire in 1983 destroying many of their records and that the serial # for the 586 was not listed and therefore made before the fire."

According to the above info, that leaves 1980, 1981,1982 and possibly 1983 depending on when the fire was in 1983. Go figure.

Anymore suggestions? Thanks!

I got off my *** and checked my SCSW. This is what I can say tell you, and I'm far from an expert. According to my SCSW:

Jan. 1984 ADT 3000
Nov. 1984 AEV-AFJ

Unless your serial # prefix, AEL, was made out of sequence (which is possible), yours should be an early '84 gun, as it's serial # lies between the two that I've listed above.

Unlike you flop-shank, sir, instead of S&W getting off their a-ses, it sounds like they need to pull their heads out of theirs.

Thank you very much for the information!

flop-shank,
I pulled the grips off a few minutes ago and they had June 1984 stamped on them. If they are the originals, which they should be, it certainly verifies your dates and proves S&W customer service wrong.

Thanks again sir!
