An earlier post had an issue about corrosion in the internal compensator ports of the new half lug Model 500.

I called S&W Customer Service this morning and got a guy who sounded like he knew his business.
He said corrosion wasn't an issue. He said that if one were concerned, to tilt the muzzle up and put solvent into the ports, let it sit for a while and then drain it out. He said that they haven't had corrosion issues with stainless two-piece barrels. Don

I thought I had corrosion in the muzzle brake of an AR15 and braked SS Contender barrel once, but it turned out to be fine copper fouling that will air oxidize quickly and resemble corrosion. In fact, it is corrosion of the copper fouling, not the steel. Sounds like good advice from S&W for cleaning it up. Worked for me.

I just noticed last night some greenish deposits in the forcing cone as I was going over a recently acquired Model 53. I immediately suspected copper fouling and plan to tear the gun down and give it the thorough cleaning it deserves.

I did find that a drop of breakfree and some gentle rubbing (my fingertip, no cloth) would take off the grime line on the side panels where target stocks had been allowed to sit too long. I was afraid I might have had some corrosion or rust going, but it all cleaned up nicely with slow and steady rubbing.
