Hello Folks, Just been glossing over a few of the forums I frequent and noticed there were several gun model specific forums with a lot of activity and I wondered if there would be any interest in starting a Smith and Wesson 640 Club? I thought it would be fun and useful to share our thoughts, experiences and + and -'s with such a great little revolver.
I love mine and am having a ball messing around with the Crimson Trace Laser Grip sights. However, with all my firearm's I'm cpmstamtly trying to think of different ways to challenge myself and the weapon. Do it enough and you will really get to know what you personally (not someone else) can or can't get out of the gun. I've have guns I couldn't shoot if my life depended on it, but a buddy could shoot bullseye's all day with the same gun. Go figure?????
Ok, let's see where this leads---Go S&W 640 Club
Jim

I love my 38 Special Model 640. It is a great carry piece that has been through the rough with me for the past 17 years.

Sounds good!
I just recently picked up a current 640 in .357 Mag.
It has become my "standard" carry item, albeit it usually with .38+P Gold Dot for the first three shots, then .357 (145gr Silvertips).

I'm Still Looking For Mine..

I'll have to Be happy With My 940 & 642 For Now.

You Should Maybe Start a Centennial Club But Then that would shut out BodyGaurd & Cheif Special Owners, Maybe a J Frame Club..
Enjoy That 640 Jim

Dandy little guns.

My 640 no dash has SN # BFU01XX, made on May 14, 1991.

Just tonight I test-fired a 640 at my local range. Started with .38 Special rounds and then tried out a few .357 Magnums. The flashes were so bright, the rest of the people on the range all came up to see what I was firing. It was hilarious, the look on their faces when they saw the snub-nosed revolver I was shooting.

I love my 640 .357. With five Speer GD SB .357's on board, it was my ideal compromise. All carry pieces compromise something: Concealability, power, weight, potential reliability, capacity, recoil, accuracy, etc. The 640 happened to be my sweet spot--your mileage may be somewhat different.

Same here! I bought mine brand new in April of 1990; it's one of the "CEN" prefix models marked "Tested for +P+". I love that little gun--it's my all-time favorite revolver.

Geez, I had one of those back in '90. Made the VERY foolish decision to sell it to a non-shooter friend, for home protection.

His wife decided that she didn't think it was a bad idea, so he "disposed" of it by taking and turning it in to the local police station......without telling me...........Nice.....UGH!

Hello and thanks for the fantastic response to the new Smith and Wesson 640 Club. I thought about suggesting the name "S&W 640 Centennial Club", but couldn't bring myself to exclude the thousands of proud owners of all the Smith 640 model styles. And besides, how can you exclude any member of the evolving family of an icon in the revolver industry?
This isn't a commercial because I've never personally used one of these, but maybe some of you out there in 640 Land have....but I want to pocket carry my little 640 Centennial so I've ordered a pocket holster for it and hope it works out for me. It's a "Mika's" at http://www.frontiernet.net/~akim/ and should get it in 3-4 weeks. I've heard they're nicely made with high quality materials and fit the gun very well you ordered it for. Again...based on what I've read and heard they are comfortable, have no imprint while carrying and stay put when you pull your gun.
Thanks and good shooting.

I got lucky. My 640 (38) came from the factory with rounded edges as if it came from the custom shop. I still can't post pictures here, or I'd show the gun and my cut down Safariland finger groove, open back strap grips.
It's loaded with Buffalo Bore Standard Pressure 158's as the first 2 and BB +P 158's as the last 3. I have a nickel 49, a pre lock nickel 442 and my always 340 PD, but I absolutely love my 640.

The 640 and 649 are two of my favorite pocket/belly guns - when it's not feasible to carry something larger, one of these invariably goes along with me. While the 649 gives the option of a single-action shot, with the 640, there's nothing to remember except point and shoot. I think the 640 trigger, over time and double action use only, will develop, as has mine, a superior double action pull - very smooth.

I'm in!

Gee I didn't realize when I bought my 640 years go that it came with a free club membership!!

My CEN prefix +P+. Currently, wearing lasers instead of the stags. What looks like a Tyler T-grip is actually a similar insert made by S&W.

H Richard, there ought to be a way to include that beauty! I longed for a Centennial for a good while. When the original 640 came out I jumped on the first one I saw.

The reason I got the 640 is because of the Centennial.

I bought my 640 back in 1993 as my first off-duty and back-up gun. I still have it, and still carry it off duty. I've since put Spegal cocobolo boot grips on her. My carry load is either the Speer 135gr Gold Dot, or the old Federal 158gr Nyclad SWCHP.

I don't know what I'd do without this little gun. It's been one of the best revolvers I've ever owned.

Just got a 640 no dash, no lock, so I guess I'm part of the club. I'm an average shot and am using gold dot +P 125 gr GDHP as a defensive load. Does this make sense? Thank you all who provided advice regarding my purchase.

Hey Folks, It's great to get all these fantastic responses showing an interest in putting together our own Smith and Wesson 640 Club. Also thanks to the forum managers for allowing us to do something like this. I wasn't sure if the forum rules allowed it, SO THANKS GUY'S.
I love those pic's and it's obvious some of you are not only great sport shooters with a gun, but also a camera. Man I wish I could take pictures like that. Maybe we need a Q & A workshop on digital picture taking. or maybe a photo contest for the most original pose or shot of their 640 in action or just hanging out. Any ideal??? Or am I nuts? What do you think???
Went to the range yesterday and didn't use the CT and surprised myself. The trigger is really smoothing out and breaking very nicely. I put it up against my 686 4" brl, firing a box of 38+P's and box of plain old Win 38 FMJ's from WallMart. No....it wasn't fair, but it was fun and the little 640 sure didn't embarrass itself either up to arougn 30'.
Anyway, thanks for all your pic's and interest and look to hear how your having fun with your 640's.
JimK

I know this is an older thread, but I am happy to announce myself as another probationary member of the Centennial Model 640 club. I picked up this no-dash, pre-lock beauty last week from a coworker, found some old Magna stocks and an original S&W grip adapter on eeebay, cleaned her up and am enjoying her immensely! Waistgunner

Hi Guys, I purchased a 640-2 .38 in beautiful shape and sold it the next day for $150 more than I paid for it. Several forum members suggested that if I was going to have one, to get the 640-1 in .357 instead. That is why I sold it. Thoughts please for replacement. I have a bobbed hammer 337Ti that I carry all the time now but I am longing for a 640. The higher backstrap fits my had better and I don't really see me ever firing it DA anyway. ???

These things get obsessive

I bought a 40-1 Classic . . loved it.

SO I got a 640 that I liked so much that I got a 642 . . .which led me to a 37 . .which made my hand so sore that I got 631 that was so comfortable that I got a 432 which was so sweet that I got a 331

Wow.....This thread has don pretty well. Since I started it several months ago. I have sold the 642 because ...try as hard as I could I just didn't care for shooting it and finally unloaded it.
In the meantime my little 640-3 with the C-Trace go to the range a couple times a month. The 640-3's place is on the night stand beside me every night.
Good shooting,
JimK
