Came across a six-shot 617 (square butt) at my local shop. 6" barrel, high polish without a blemish, target hammer (.500") and trigger (.400" serrated), black rear sight blade on a new style sight and black front pinned-in patridge blade. The most interesting thing are the stocks, S&W finger groove combat grips made of Goncalo Alves (sp?)and in perfect shape...not a blemish. The gun looks like it came off the rack yesterday. What value would you guys put on it?

New ones from Buds are 600 delivered. Does the lock bother you. They are 10 rounds. This means absolutely nothing to your question.

If it is a stainless gun, then I believe that someone high polished it, I dont believe they came that way,,, So it is up to you? If you like it, buy it!
I would think 4-5 max.

Between 5 and 600. There is a huge demand for these guns. The square butt was common for 617s made in the early 90's and they came equipped with combat grips before Smith changed over to rubber. Actually, some of the early model 617s seem to have come with target grips. I have a 617 no-dash, vintage 1991, with targets and a 617-1, vintage 1992, with combats.

I have tracks on two versions of the 617 Plus, one with a 6-in Bbl, the other with the more sought after 4-in Bbl.

Smith & Wesson 617 Plus Revolver 6-in bbl: .22, Long Rifle. Bluebook of Gun Values (29th Edition) indicates between $431 in 98% condition and $566 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 40 recorded prices for guns represented as 95% or better using local and internet sources for this gun from $350 to $595 over a period of 362 days ending October 11, 2008. The average price as of that date was $451. Current or last MSRP is $861.

Smith & Wesson 617-6 Plus Revolver 4-in Bbl: .22, Long Rifle. Bluebook of Gun Values (29th Edition) indicates between $431 in 98% condition and $566 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 24 recorded prices for guns represented as 95% or better using local and internet sources for this gun from $350 to $650 over a period of 1913 days ending September 7, 2008. The average price as of that date was $467. Current or last MSRP is $861.

It sounds like a real nice gun, cprher. I have a 4-in Plus 686-6 with the lock (not an issue with me, especially with this gun). It is totally a tack driver and gets a lot of range time for that reason and because I can have a lot of fun for relatively little money spent on ammo.

I agree with Stevie. The rubber grips on later guns have little value-nice wood combats can realize a 100.A six shot gun, sans lock, with target features, and wood grips is as a good as a 617 comes...unless you stumble across a lugless version.

If it helps you decide, I saw an identical 617 sell for $525 recently. The grips alone are worth $80 to $100.
