I have a model 586 with Belgian proof marks on it. Picked it up used a few years ago. Any ideas as why it would have have these markings?

I'd watch it very closely...it may try to make it to the kitchen to make waffles!

Sorry...seriously, perhaps it was exported and then imported back to the US? Or, it was meant for export but the order fell through and it never was exported?

It seems the gun was produced and/or imported to any European market.
All of my S&Ws have Belgian proof marks, even so the guns were bought in Germany.
Seems like getting the required proof markings is rather cheap in Belgium ...

olbagger, a Letter from S&W ($50) will give you the ship date and dealer it was delivered to, and a little history of the line.
S&W Letter of Authenticity request

Thank you Hermann! I've been wondering why my 625-2 (that was delivered to Parker Hale in England) has Belgian proofs. That makes sense.

Kind of like not painting a new house to keep the tax collector away.
