Hello All: Today I talked with a fellow who has a 4 inch 586-no dash for sale. He says its only had a few cylinders worth through it, and he has the original box. Price- $800 At first I thought it was way too high, the catalog lists ANIB at $700, but are things climbing that fast? It will cost me another $75 to register it here in California too, but private transfers are the only way to get guns like this here. I don't have a .357 and thought a 19, 27, or 28 might be nice too and easier to find. Whadda ya think?

Unfortunately it is a sellers market in California, and any pre lock pre MIM Smith & Wesson is going to sell at full value most of the time. I know that once in a while something will pop up at the smaller shops close to where I am and if the price is good they don't last long, hell even when they are priced high they sell. We have the law against us with the safety certified roster BS here, so if you want to collect anything that is not more than 50 years old but is no longer in production it is expensive. I guess you just need to determine if you feel that you really need the 586, which is a great revolver.

If it is like new as you say, $800 is not out of line for Kali. The older pre-lock guns with forged hammers and triggers carry a premium, almost unused is also a premium.

After you see somebody pay $3500 for a Colt Python or $4000 for a valtro (which originally sold new for $1200), it's hard to be shocked by any gun prices.

If the gun was NIB with all the box candy, I'd pay $800. In the condition you described, I'd pay $650. They're excellent guns, but $800 is still a bit too much IMHO.

$75?? PPT should be $35. I'm in CA too and that's a crazy price for a 586. That's way more than I paid for a 27-2 a few months ago.

I did end up buying the gun, and actually it was $38. Last month I paid $75 to another dealer to do a transfer into the state from Massachusetts on a pre-15, and I guessed it would be the same. This 586 is like new. In the original 2 piece box, no M stamp, no turn line, unopened tool kit, all papers, even the original receipt of sale for a something over $200. AAC serial number puts it in 1980, maybe 1981 production. If it weren't for some faint copper in the rifling, I would believe it was unfired. I have always wanted one, and I bet I'll never see a better one. I'll post some pix after I pick it up Feb. 2. ezb
