Meprolite . . . they are not recommended for the Mountain Gun Barrel, set as low as possible, that gun shoots about 2 inches high at 30 yards - I like it like that. I have at least 6 sets of them, they drop into the factory rear sight and fit the front just fine.

Is that true ? I'll post pics when I figure out how. Thanks.......one eye joe
Yes, the 686 plus (7 shot) Mountain Gun is hard to come by, if you decide to sell and your's is 98% I'd give you $600 for it.

Hey andyo5, I got my Hi-Viz sights from Midway for about $30. They work on K,L and N frames and pick up available light unlike Meprolites. The Hi-Viz sight WONT help you in a dark port of an indoor range, or in a dark bedroom against an intruder. Not enough ambient light to light up the tube. They work great in well lit environments and outdoors. I tried to cut & paste them to you. I'm a computer novice, so I hope it works.........one eye joe http://www.midwayusa.com/Searc...i-Viz%20sights____-_

New to the forum and I thought this would be a good place to start. Here's my 686+ MG.

I was thinking about getting a pair of those 60 Pro grips also. Where and how did you find them? I assume they fit a round butt and have a partially covered backstrap.

(It helps them look it up if they have the SKU from the gun.) Your grips are really great, and I'd love to have at least one set of those to put on one of my Smith & Wessons.

I recently purchased three sets of the grips that come on the S&W Model 60 Pro-series, and I'm about to buy a fourth set. (One set for my wife's 5-inch Model 60, another set for her 5-inch Model 63, and a third for my 3-inch Model 60. The fourth set are intended for my older 4-inch round butt Model 34.) The grips on your gun are close in shape to the Pro series model 60 grips, so I think they might be really nice on another N-Frame gun. I'd sure like to give them a try anyway.

Thank you for posting a photo of your mountain gun! It is beautiful!

My 625MGs in .45 Colt:

The top one is the 625-7 my wife bought new for me seven years ago this August. It was my first S&W. The lower one, a 625-6, was a LN trade for a SS Bisley .45. Great fun - super plinkers. I keep a speedloader (HKS #25-5) loaded with Speer 250gr Gold Dots (Low speed #4484 bullets.) so it can double as a house/Jeep gun.

I replaced my 629MG with a regular 4" 629 as it has a larger hammer and trigger and replaces the black/black sights with an orange ramp/white outline sight line-up - and non-tapered barrel - at only two ounces more. Also, it has the roll-marked barrel vs the laser-marked barrels of the MGs - which wear away!

This Mountain Gun addiction of mine is getting expensive, just picked up a LNIB 625-6 in .45 Colt.
Dandy gun, pre-lock, pre MIM.
Haven't shot it yet, but will today!

I have a 625 45LC and 629 MG and they are both awesome. I haven't had a chance to look, but I would love to find a 625 45ACP MG. I probably have enough cash stashed to buy it!!

Thanks, Jon

I shot the .45 Colt today, it's a decisively better gopher stopper than the .45ACP.

Picked this little guy up on Thursday. A 625-6 that I got for a sweet price. I bought the replacement grips from Eagle at the NRA Meeting yesterday. Fits my hand so much better now!

Very Cool Thread! Would it be appropriate to suggest adding info on which ones were made in which years. I know the 29s and 629s span several years, but the odd .45ACP and .41 Mag ones only came around once in a while I believe. What about info on the numbers manufactured? (or I could just shut up and look at the pretty pictures)

I just called Smith & Wesson and told them I wanted grips like the ones that come on the pro-series Model 60. I had the SKU of the gun available (SKU: 178013) so it was easy for them to look the grips up. I think the 3-inch adjustable sight Model 60 with the underlug looks better with the Pro grips than the Pro Model does! It handles really well with the Pro grips too.

Looks like a lot of people besides me like the concept of the Mountain Gun. I currently own three. I first purchased a 25-13 in .45 Colt. Great gun, except it's blued (holster wear possible) and it has the ugly lock.

Then I found a stainless 625-9, also in .45 Colt. Now the holster wear problem is solved, but it still had the ugly lock.

Here's a shot of these two guns:

FINALLY, I found this one. It's a 625-6, with certain modifications to make it, in my opinion, ideal. I junked the plain black ramped sight for one with a red insert, obtained from Midway. Next, I got read of the "tear drop" cylinder release in favor of the old style. This is mostly aesthetic, but I think my thumb gets a better purchase with the old style. Then I got a pair of Ahrends Retro Targets. Couldn't ask for better with a holster gun. Pretty and practical. Finally, I had Nelson Ford do one of his primo action jobs on the gun so it's smooth as glass in double action fire. I think what I have here is ultimate trail gun:

Did you get a SKU for the grips alone? If so can you share it?

I believe it was called a 'Mountain Lite' in a 5 shot .44 Spl with, I think, a 3" barrel and a Sc frame and hi-viz sights.

Oh man. Am I going to resurrect an 11 year old picture thread?

This 629-2 Mountain Revolver came with the Pachmayr Decelerator, but it's split at the top. Thought these Mayan Bloodwood Ahrends boot grips might look sharp. I am less than enthusiastic about shooting full power .44 Magnums through this gun, but we'll see how I like them. They came with a slight flaw/chip near the escutcheon.

They don't make one in 41 Special so a a model 28 got transformed into a 41 Special mountain gun with old ivories.

I have posted these before but I like showing them to folks.

First up is my Foothills Revolver (no mountains in Ohio, just foothills!). Back in the 80s, I wanted a 4”, 45 ACP revolver. Factory was not making them and the few they had previously made were too pricey for a rookie LEO. So, I took the barrel off my Model 28-2 and sent it to Richard Nickel (deceased) to bore and rifle to .452. I fitted a 25-2 cylinder and reworked the action. When the barrel came back, it was one thread short of being correct for the cylinder so that got reworked and fitted. Also removed and replaced the frame lug. Rounded off the grip frame also. And here it is, long before S&W made it easy to get one, my Foothills revolver.

This one has been discussed here before. It is one of fifteen 629-3 guns made in the mountain gun configuration for the Alaska State Troopers academy staff. It has seen plenty of use but is still mechanically sound. No mountain gun markings. Special serial number starts with AST.

Here's my 629-2 Mountain Revolver

The factory Pachs have been stored and it now wears Hogues. It replaced a 24-3 that went to put shoes on the kids' feet years ago. While I've shot magnums in it, in my mind it is my favorite .44 Special.

Your story is very similar to mine. I sold my M24-3 that I had round butted to generate funds to have in savings. THEN, my now ex decided she wanted some antique furniture.

After she was GONE, I bought my M629 to replace the M24-3.

PS: Why are divorces so expensive? BECAUSE THEY ARE WORTH IT!!!

Why are so many of the pictures "unavailable" in this thread? Have I not kept up with something of vital interest. Posting pictures has always been a hindrance in my opinion.

Jim,

This is an old thread from 2009, recently resuscitated. My guess is many of the photographs are either on photo bull et or some other unsupported imaging site.

This is my 625-6 .45 Colt Mountain Gun with Ahrends Tactical grips made from a slab of walnut I sent them.

Favorite snack is a 255 grain RNFP Bear Creek Supply bullet over 8.0 grains of Unique in Winchester brass with a Federal primer. Yum!
