I have come across two 686-3's both 2 1/2" barrels.. one is a round butt and one is a square butt.. I thought they only were produced in round butt for that barrel size. any help or thought??

I thought that also, however you never know with S&W. However the more likely situation is someone swaped the 2.5" barrel onto a SB gun.

I'm not trying to be insulting, but is that based on seeing the actual frame or just the grips? Some folks aren't aware that there are RB to SB conversion grips. If you know this please disregard my post.

If memory serves it was about then that "combat" guns could be had with a RB but Sq butt was the basic model.. Unlike now where RB is the rule, not the exception.

Perp.. never insulting...a good question.. but in this case I have the guns and have taken the grips off.. one is round and one is square..
another point I forgot about was that I tried to check the ser# of the square butt in the SCS&W and it does not show ( Possible transition gun??)
