Went into a hardware store yesterday that is out of my regular stomping grounds. They had a fairly large gun area where I spotted this 629-1 3" barrel, mag-na-portd, night sights and a very nice action job. Is this a Lew Horton? I understood they had un-fluted cylinders. Is this a Trail Boss? The SCSW is not clear as my serial # is AWC99XX.

Thanks Dan, I got lucky finding this one. Hopefully someone can give me some background on this variation.

I agree on some aftermarket additions since it went to mag-na-port where the action job was done and the sights installed. Guessing it was ported at the same time instead of going through the factory.

I would say it started life as a regular 629-1 that someone customized with the night sights and Mag Na Porting.
I believe Lew Horton distributed some as well as other distributers.
You could check with S&W if yours was sent to Lew Horton.
But there are others here more knowledgable about such matters.

That should be product code 103610, distributed by both Lew Horton and S&W (the Lew Horton thing is meaningless) in the 1985-1987 timeframe. Your serial number denotes a 1987 vintage. The magna porting was done aftermarket most likely. This vintage (629-1) had a fluted cyl. Whereas the 629-2 had a full lug barrel and was UN-fluted. This also came shipped with the round butt combat stocks...later versions had the tupperware grips. Nice catch!
