As a matter of principle, I prefer my revolvers to have only two holes in the barrel, the one at the dangerous end and the one at the safe end. Although he used black powder, Clint Smith was able to set something on fire with a Taurus something or another than had one of those ports in the end. Article and pictures appeared in either American Handgunner or Guns. I think that the chance of garbage being ejected out the port and into your eyes does not outweigh any perceived advantage. After all, the recoil of the 38 special is not bad enough to need a port. Sort of like getting a ported 9mm. Good solution to a non-existant problem.

FWIW, I am very happy with my ported Ruger SP101 and have used it without problem in several classes. But, to each his/her own.

Finally had the opportunity to test fire my new ported 642.
I could not be happier. Muzzle jump with Speer 135 grain +p+ was much less than in my regular 642. Accuracy was excellent, as was reliability. I am extremely happy with this fine little revolver.

Not SNW, but...
"bump to top"

A way to keep the thread on the first page/active.

And, as not to hijack-

I have four magnaported S&W's, and the porting really does work well to keep the muzzle down.

Yes, if you were forced to use the gun from a retention position you'd risk some ejecta, but you know, all my revolvers will shoot fire and unburned powder out of the B/C gap as well.

I don't think the risk of injury from the firearm to myself is high enough to matter in this situation, but, as always, YMMV.

I just put one on lay-a-way. It is a special order one in that it has the gun stores Shoot Straight Logo and the fancy wood compact grips like my wife's 642 lady smith. The shade of the grips is more tan than the reddish on the 642LS. The trigger seems to be much better than our 642LS was. I had to pay the $75 S&W trigger tax to get that one straight.

I'll post my shooting impressions in about a month. Even though it was on sale for less than $500 I can't sneak that much past the wife all at once. Not that I'm not pretty good at doing that since for the past 15 years she has thought that my pair of Custom Silver Slided Glock 23 and 22 are the same gun.

Anybody else tried the new power port J-Frames?

If they didn't have the lock, that'd be even better.

I wonder if the extra 1/4" of barrel length over the standard 1-7/8" barrel makes up for the velocity lost through porting?

Looks like the sight radius might even be shorter than the standard J-frame snub with the front ramp moved rearward to make room for the port.

I have finally got around to getting it out of the store. I shot it with 158gr Semi-Wadcutters at about 750fps, 158gr Semi-Wadcutter +Ps at about 900fps and some Glaser SilverTips +Ps going out at about 1250fps. I couldn't really tell too much difference between the two 158grs. They both kicked pretty hard. Kind of like my 686 4" with 125gr Mags. I would not say it was punishing but I could tell after about 150 rounds that I was starting to have trouble pulling the trigger without pulling it off target. I did have to rub my hand once and a while. I also fired my 642LS for comparison. The S&W Tax was well worth it as I fired 50 rounds out of it toward the end of my session with the 642 PowerPort. The trigger was easy to manage even when coming up on 200 rounds of total fired. I'm going to get the trigger done like my 642LS. That made more of a difference than the PowerPort. However, when I shot a total of ten Glaser Silver +Ps out of it the PowerPort really paid off. The recoil was minimal and easy to keep on target. It shot about three inches low at 10 yards where the 158 gainers where about two inches high. But the sound was phenomenal. I was shooting at an indoor range and everyone else stopped what they were doing and watched the little gun throw out an absolutely furious boom that rivaled any magnum. If you miss em they'll be ducking for sure.

It is so light that I often forget it is in my left pocket. The superfly breaks up the outline and is really quick to draw.

Now, after the trigger job I'm going to put on a Tritium Big Dot front sight.
