Cool, I hope this is going to be a trend and not a one shot thing.

Great news.
I am really hoping this will continue with the bodyguards as well. I really need a new no-lock 638.

RSR does indeed show the no lock 442s:
SW102810FC S&W 442 1.8725" 38SPL MATTE BL WO/IL
They also have, as of the time this is written 975 of the no lock 642s left as well.
Good show!

If I had known this good news, I never would have bought the 642s and 37s that I did!
I prefer the 442 over the 642 and 37.

Looks like RSR got S&W to drop the lock...wouldn't it be great if that would become a trend, and the lock would vanish forever on all S&Ws?? Then maybe we could persuade them to put forged hammer & triggers back in them!

I'm starting to think that S&W is feeding a line to us when they say that they "found some old, no-lock frames". I think they're planning to slowly add some more to line-up in limited runs to boost their sales for the people that want to snatch them up because "they are limited". It is a way of boosting sales, and it is sure working, but its not the proper way to go about it. If I would've known about the 442's I wouldn't have bought the 642 that I just bought. Oh well, maybe once my fiance shoots the 642 she'll want that one or a 442 that I can shoot too.

I dont like the "games" S&W is playing either.
I bought four 642s thinking they would be a "limited edition". I would MUCH rather have a 442! Wish I had known. Anyone want to buy a few 642s? LOL!

Parabellum, is this the good news you alluded to previously?
Is there more to come? Have we who despise the lock finally gotten S&W's attention? Regards 18DAI.

We'll never get a straight answer to the questions we have about the lock. Just the way it is.
I'm glad I can go out a buy a new Smith and Wesson revolver without the lock. And I did. Will again if they keep it up.

I agree about the straight answer.
I've bought one of all the new no locks so far and will be getting one of these new 442-1s too.

doesnt matter to me either way....since i only buy non locked guns this only floods the market for availability.
some say "if i had known i wouldnt have bought...." why not? whats the difference between the 642/442 you just bought and the 642/442 they are now coming out with? if its the lock then it really didnt matter to you anyway since the non locked used guns are still on the market for descent prices and you opted for a locked gun.

I just bought a no lock 642 and do not regret it at all. I very well may buy a no lock 442 as well to keep as a backup just in case the 642 ever fails. I hope they continue this trend.

The "games" you are speaking of is very effective marketing! It is called good business. I am glad S&W is doing this, and will gladly keep coming back to the no-lock revolver trough as long as they keep making them. If S&W unveiled their long-term business plan, it would possibly decrease sales, as everyone would wait for the "perfect" model they want which is scheduled for two years down the road. Good for S&W. This keeps us guessing, and buying, and keeps the dedicated S&W employees at work. Good show.

I'm gonna get either a no-lock 642 or 442. I like the dark finish better of the 442 but pocket carrying in humid FL makes me think I'd be better off with the 642 due to less rust worries.

Not bitching, and gladly picked up a 642 last week, however if S&W is merely trickling out no-lock guns to boost short term sales, then they are being myopic and poorly serving their best customers... Having said that, Im not buying them as investments, I picked up the 642 so I can retire my 442 that I have been carrying as a backup, and shooting quartely for the last 10 years. If they make more in other models, I will buy those I like...

If you are happy with the "new" NO-LOCKS, fax a quick note to:
Leland Nichols
S&W Chief Operating Officer
FAX# 413-747-3317
He needs to hear these comments and how you spent your hard earn money on a "new" no-lock Smith!!!

My point is that I really wanted the 442. I have a limited income and can't spend much on guns. When the 642 no-lock came out I decided that I would settle for a 642 just to be sure I could get one without the lock. I've already bought and paid for it. Now S&W decides that they're making 442 w/o the lock as well. So it turns out that I could have gotten the one I really wanted but can't afford it now that I've settled for something similar. I'm not bitching and whining, I consider myself lucky to have one. But it is aggravating that S&W is keeping people in the dark about what they will and will not produce.

Perhaps you should consider selling your 642-1 and using the proceeds to purchase a 442, if that's what you really want.

My experience has been that, with the way they are currently applying the finish, the 442 finish appears to be more durable than the 642. Although once the finish is penetrated, the 642's stainless barrel and cylnder should stand up better. (I previously owned a 642-2 and had it refinished twice as the standard S&W finish peeled. The finish on my two older 642-1s and my 442-1 seems to hold up much better.) I don't really have experience with the latest blue/black 442 finish but I suspect it's the clear coat on the newer 642s that has the problem.

The M&P pistols are available with or without the lock. Maybe S&W has wised up to the fact that those of us who don't want the lock aren't buying new revolvers, and the locks aren't required in most states.

Anybody have one of these 442's in their hands yet? I am curious how the trigger is.
I got a no-lock 37 a few years back and the trigger was great! If these are as good, I definitely will get one!
thanks

I don't think they've come in yet. But from what I saw it was listed on the website as an expected item.

How about a 640???
Do you think the lock guns will be more collectible? I probably should purchase some and keep them NIB.

I want to get a couple of these so I called RSR. They have them on order. When I called S&W to inquire when they may be shipping to RSR I was told they were all sold and had been shipped long ago to RSR. I called RSR again and was assured that they were on order and were inbound but my sales rep didn't know when. Some of you may recall that I bought a set of these back in January. I got sequential serial numbers and I gave one to my best friend. Well now that the 442 is going to be available without the lock I have to get my friend and I a set of these too. We'll be selling the set with the locks of course. I keep checking RSR daily and I hope I can get another set. I'll post when they get them if anybody wants a heads up. Thanks.
