Found a 686-4 with a 2.5 inch barrel locally for $450 that I am going to check out tomorrow.

Serial number BRD85XX. Any idea of the date or if it would have a lock?

Sounds like a great price. What do you guys think?

686-4 started around 1995 and would be without the lock. I believe the -5 was the last w/o the lock.

The 686-6 was the first revision with the IL. $450 sounds like a good price to me. A lot of people consider the 686-4 to be the finest variation made.

I think it dates around 1994. I'm not sure what 90% looks like on a stainless steel gun.

If that is the OTD price-good!
As far as Stainless-in my opinion, there isn't any such thing as a 90% gun unless someone slid it along concrete ot used a dremel on it.

The 686-4 is also the last run with the firing pin on the hammer.

IMHO, 686-4 is the best of the 686s with all the engineering changes you want and none that you do not.

Over the phone the clerk said that he would rate it at 95% and that the few wear marks on it should buff out with some elbo grease.

It has Pacmayer grips on it.

Any suggestions on replacement grips?

That price is good for California.

I'd go with Hogues.

I have a 686-4 2.5" with the BRD prefix serial # and it is non-lock, and has actual forged metal parts (hammer & trigger) in it. That one you mention should be the "good one" also. $450 is a decent price...I think I paid $416 delivered for mine about a year ago from auction.

That's where the gun was. I saw it back when this post was new. It's not there any more.

It is now. I was just there this morning and took it off of hold. I ended up getting a sweet blued Model 19 to go with my 66-2. I'm picking it up this afternoon hopefully.

5Wire, I work in Portsmouth, small world.

$450 is not a bad price for the snubbie.I have been looking at one for $650, which I think is $200 to high.
