If I am correct, this wasn't an issue gun.
If I am correct, this was a commemorative.
I don't have one, but have a retired GSP friend that does.
Others more knowledgeable will chime in on this.
I think there is a website that states the history of the GSP and their sidearms, I just can't find it.

That would be the 26-1 (the re-issue in the 80s). There is a picture of it in the 3rd edition of SC of S&Ws. If anyone has one they want to part with, let me know!!!

Your question peaked my interest...
So I gave my old trooper friend a call...
He stated that he thought and was told that pre-WWII, the very first Georgia State Troopers might have been armed with either Colt or S&W's in .45 Colt.
That would mean it either was a Colt New Service or a S&W Model of 1926 in .45 Colt.
In the 1950's, they were issued .357 Magnums...and stayed with those (last one he was issued was a model 66) until they got the 4506's, and then they were given plastic pistols from an Austrian company.

About 40 of these unmarked Model 26-1s were produced after the GSP Commemorative run. The barrel simply reads ".45 Colt Ctg."
Too bad these are so scarce--who wouldn't like an N-Frame .45 Colt with a lightweight 5" barrel?
I am fortunate to have obtained one of these from a Forum member a few years ago.

Here's a somewhat better picture--currently wearing a gorgeous set of Keith Brown Ropers...

Hmm, except for an inch longer barrel, it's very similar to a Mountain Gun. (N frame, tapered barrel, etc.) Must be something about that configuration that appeals to lot of people.

Sorry guys...wrong information.
"In 1937, the GSP were issued Colts that cost $27.00 each..."
So...it wasn't a S&W, and I still don't know what the caliber was...
Maybe some Colt collectors might know or have some more information...

You get an extra inch of sight radius (and velocity, though it may be a small increase) but it weighs no more than a 25-5 with a four inch barrel.

Robbt, I have a 28-2 that has been converted to 44 special. It was originally issued to GSP and is so marked below the cylinder window on the left side.
