I've got a chance to get my hands on an original 627PC or a newer one with lock and aluminum case. Both are used with less than 200 rounds thru them. Which is the better gun and would you pay more for one over the other.
I'm planing on using it for Steel and Icore, no scope at this point, maybe later.
Thanks for your educated opinion.

Can't go wrong with either one, but if they are the same price, I would go with the no-lock.

Thanks for all of the input. I'm still looking for more. I guess I should have been more specific about quality and value (for cost of acquisition and/or collector value).
At this point I'm getting that more people than not would rather have no lock but otherwise quality and price are about the same.????

I would not hesitate to get the pre-lock, especially if similarly priced. That's any easy one.

How many moons? Its a fair question. Could be the deal breaker or maker.
Given the choice, I always go older pre lock. I assume the difference is the cute little carrying case, or its what you're seeing as the difference.
Mine without the lock came new with the case. I'm guessing someone kept the case as their profit on the deal. Maybe you can negotiate a better price on the one without the case.

No lock! Although I do not dispute that both are great guns. I would always choose with out lock, unless there was a great deal of difference in how much the pre lock one had been used, or abused.

I wouldn't let the IL be a factor unless they are in like condition. Take the one that is in the best condition. I doubt if you will have a problem with the IL, much less an IL on a gun that heavy.

Is the lock you are referring to the supplied padlock or the intregrated trigger lock in the frame? Toss the padlock... not worth considering.
I bought my 627PC about a month ago. My first revolver. No regrets what so ever. I paid $960 at a dealer's shop and just saw one today at a large outdoor/sporting goods retailer for $930. Good used versions go for about $750-$800.

The IL (internal lock). The little key hole above the cylinder release.

That is it. That is what IL refers to.

How about Curtain #3? I am speaking of a 4" 627 - like my 627 Pro, SKU #178014, from last year (5/08). You can change the front sight in seconds without tools - put some decent grips on it, like the Ahrends retro targets mine sports. It comes with a modicum of a trigger job - easily improved. Great SPC revolver, too. Pre dished for moonclips and it has eased charge holes, as well.
Don't get me wrong - my JM PC627 V-Comp is a definite keeper - it has a home. The 627 Pro has certainly been shot a lot more in the last eight months - it is handier, too. When I bought my old PC 627, several years back, the original owner had misplaced the JM grips. I tried the replacement pair on the 627 Pro first. I had fg square conversion Ahrends on the PC 627 - tried them on the 627 Pro. For me - they are shown gripped as they should be - great grabs. Note - neither has seen anything tougher than a +P .38 Special in a .357 M case. Oddly, the PC is still barely lighter & slicker - and pops any primers - while my 627 Pro is Federal only. You cannot beat a S&W 'action job', like the PC Shop guns once came with. The biggest problems I've had with my PC627 are the odd front sight, aftermarket HiViz seemingly not available. The other fault is the comp or blank - another part to clean. Heck, any 627 is nice!

I like the 627s and I plan on buying a 4" one some day when I can buy one right. But in the mean time I will put up with these.

I got this one recently for about $965, and I love it. Hate the cheapo aluminum box, though. Unless this is going to be a self- or home-defense weapon, don't worry about the lock. Worst that could happen is you'd miss a shot at a piece of paper or a deer or some such, even in the extremely unlikely event that the lock engaged unintentionally.

The problem solved itself. The lock model went for $800 and I bought it. I was going to go ahead and buy the no lock and decide which one to keep. The no lock turned out to be a Lew Horton model which someone decided was worth $1500. I sure do like my new 627-5.
