I came across a Mod 65-3 3" barrel in my local Pawn Shop. It was stamped NYSP on left side of the frame. Gun was in OK condition, mostly dinged up. What's its value & any history?
Many Thanks
They had it marked $319.00.

IMO, not a bad deal for a 3" bbl 65. If the mechanics are ok,it's easy to fix the dings on a stainless gun with a little elbow grease and a scotchbrite pad.
I'd think seriously about trying to get it.

My dad is a retired NYSP (New York State Police) Officer. He put 23 years in on the job. I gave him a call and asked him about the Model 65. The Model 65 was one of the departments assigned handguns, replacing the Model 28 in 1981, before adopting the Glock 17 in 1990. 3" (round butt) Model 65's were carried by detectives (B.C.I. - Bureau of Criminal Investigation) and 4" Model 681's (square butt) went to uniformed officers. The Model 65 is essential a stainless steel version of the Model 13. S&W discontinued the Model 65 in 2004. I don't think the "NYSP" stamp adds or detracts anything from the value. The NYSP are now in the process of replacing the Glock 17 with the Model 37 (45 GAP).
100% value would be around $400, 95% $300, 90% $250.
Other previous NYSP handguns include the Colt Model 1917, Colt Official Police, and S&W Model 13.

redfisherdave,
I've been looking for one of those. If you don't get it, I'd appreciate the shop info. My email is in my profile.
Thanks,
Ed
edited to add: by "looking for one of these" I meant a NYSP marked model 65. Thanks for the other offers.

That's a good price for a 3" Model 65. Buy it if you can.

That is a good price, buy it! If not, I would also be interested in that specific gun. That is the one missing NYSP model, I still need to get.

I recently purchased a model 65 3" after looking around for a few months. I paid $425.00 and have seen them advertised in the $450-$475 range. It seems to have a good reputation from what I have read and heard. When my FFL dealer was unwrapping it there was a retired BCI member at the counter who commented on it, saying he had not seen one for quite a while. If you are not interested, I too would like the name of that pawnshop. Advice, Buy it.
