My wife just inherited a 681 from her father. I haven't even had time to take and post pics of it yet, but it's a real hoot to handle.

I'm an absolute fan of the 686, which is just a 681 with adjustable sights. I don't know if they made it, but I would go for a snubbie 681 if such a thing exists.

Lots of love for both!
I Love my 581 and 681. Both are terrific.
I won a rather large bet with my 581 by hitting a silhouette at least 4 out of 6 shots at 100yrds with my support hand only. Double action at that.
Drinks were on me that evening.

I seldom ever see one for sale around here. If I could find one at a reasonable price I would sure hit it.

I wish I could find a nice 581 again. I had one that had had the but rounded and I really liked it, but like so many others, I traded it for something that I can't even remember.

I'm a big fan of the 581 and 681.
I own a 681 no dash. It's the only L-frame that regularly goes to the range with me. It has a trigger that rivals my performance center revolvers. If they would make a 681 with a 7-shot cylinder, 3" tube and no lock, I'd buy it in a minute.
I'm still searching for a nice clean 581. Regards 18DAI.

Is it against the rules for me to mention that I just saw a 581 for sale on the GoonBreaker website? No CA sales, though.

I was just in my safe looking for my deer rifles and started wiping down the pistols. Came across my model 681 NYSP version. That gun just fits so right, liked it when I carried it and would have rather stayed with the .357 than carrying the department issued Glk 17 9mm, have since switched issued guns to the 45GAP. I think I will be shooting the 681 this weekend, still one of my favorites! Joe

mine is weird. wish my pic-fu wasn't so bad. i'd post a pic.
mine has the square butt with the huge target stocks but with a wide smooth face trigger, narrow combat hammer. which all in all isn't so odd but its not matte or shiny stainless it is more of a ruger target gray. inside the yoke it says mod.681 M then on the top of the yoke it says A4 S 5X482 any idea what that all means? i think the M means it has the updated firing pin hole, yes?

M means it went to S&W or authorized armorer for the firing pin hole fix (not the correct terminology but I can't think of it right now).

The clean lines of the Model 10 but with the .357 long bore option. What's not to love?

My 681 is my regular IDPA revolver. I'm not a fan of adjustable sights on handguns, but I really like the L-frame size, so the 681 was the perfect choice for me. I'm hoping to pick up a second.
Like 18DAI, I'd love a 3" round butt 681 with no lock, and I'll throw in a front night sight, no MIM parts, and the firing pin on the hammer. Unlike 18DAI, I prefer the 6-shot cylinder. I'm sure I could get a vintage 681 smithed up to those specs, I wonder for how much? Humm....

For those that's got the hots for a 581:
Buckeye Firearms, Rogers OH (330) 227-9344; ask for Nick.
Saw one there yesterday; around 90% w/ original box & grips @ $495. I woulda snagged it, but have too many others on the lay-away bench at the moment. -S2

I had a 581 for years, one of the most accurate guns I had, just shot beautifully. I ended up giving it to my son, it is his favorite gun now.

18DAI & Landric make a good obervation. A 3 inch RB M681 would be kicks. I bet if you sent one to Mr. Bowen he could do it. Will add that to my 'what if' list of custom guns.

Is this the one your speaking of?
That's my 681-4 PC, 7-shot, with tritium front sight from Lew Horton. It's a near perfect CCW, IMHO.

I agree TexasSTEP, the perfect CCW revolver. Yours is a beauty. Those Uncle Mike grips are my favorite for my L-frame carry revolvers.
I've got them on my PC 586-5 L-comp.
Your PC 681 is a beauty. Regards 18DAI.

It's been six years or better since I've even SEEN one. They used to be quite common at gunshows but now that I can actually drop the coin on one they are nowhere to be found.
