New 442 with no Lock
So I just bought a NIB 442 with no lock where how did this happen? The spent shell casing says 5-14-10.

Smith does make new 442s and 642s that lack the internal lock. That was actually a big selling point for me when I was shopping for a J-frame... I get the feeling that resale value on these in the future will be better than the normal lock models.
Might be some other Smiths without internal locks. Anyone know of any others?

Is it marked 442-1 or 442-2? Is it cut for moon clips? Where are you located?

I bought a new model 442 about a year ago and mine doesn't have a lock. I snapped it up as fast as possible. I didn't know that they were making any without a lock.

According to the latest catalog which you can download off of S&W"s Web site, they are supposed to also make a no lock Model 640 in .357Magnum with night sights. I think they are also going to make a Model 672.
The classic Models 40 and 42 "lemon squeezers" have been available for some time now without the lock.

I just picked up a 442 for myself and a 642 for my wife. Can't find a -# on either gun or case but the 442 has a lock and the 642 does not; both came with the keys though.

Can the M442 Pro be used with loose rounds, speed loaders, speed strips, and moon clips or can it only be used with moon clips?

I've had a 442-1 (Pro-series) relieved for moonclips, no lock for a couple months now.
Loose Rounds = ok.
Speed / Quik Strips = ok.
Speedloaders (HKS 36-A) = snug, but ok.
Moonclips = NoGo. Best ammo I've found so far has been Remingtons with the soft lead SWC HP (FBI load), but even those have been... difficult. They ride high enough that the drag on the frame makes a hard trigger pull almost impossible. With Double-Tap, Fiocchi, and Speer Gold Dots, I can't even get the cylinder to close.
As I've mentioned elsewhere, I love my 442 no-lock, but the moonclip option (at least so far) has not had ANY impact on me whatsoever.

The 442/642 Pro can be used with all the above. It is not limited to the moon clips only. TK Custom who makes the moon clips for Smith states not to use Winchester or Starline brass. I've only used Federal and Magtech brass on my clips.

I didn't realize how many folks were unknowing about these guns w/o the IL. ARBlack has been selling them on here for a while.
There has been a ton of discussion about them.
Maybe good news doesn't travel as fast as it should.

Emailed S&W about my new 442 having a lock but my wife's new 642 not. The response from Paul Remillard with S&W was that "the general product has the lock...There is one distributor that can get them without".

OK, all the reports I'm finding about the internal locks locking without warning seem to involve the models with the locking flag and a hammer. Since I have a hammerless (sort of) 442 without the flag, would I have the same problem? Is the problem possibly caused by the weight, momentum or whatever of the flag part of the lock being moved by heavy recoil or being dropped?

The hammerless versions seem to still have the "nub" on the flag. So, I suspect they would still have the possibility of locking-up. To be safe, I got myself another flag and had the nub removed and re-installed the flag. Lock appears to still be there and no worry about lock-up.
I also have "the plug" installed on my other j-frame. So, I have done both methods of avoiding lock-up. I did both of these for peace-of-mind.

Sounds like I need to get with a gunsmith and learn a little more about my gun. Not sure where the nub and flag would be on my 442 but I've never taken any gun apart. Is there anywhere with exploded veiws online?

Why the constant banter about "I bought a model _ _ _ without lock", or, "I bought a mode _ _ _ with lock"? The only thing this does is run off new members that don't know what is going on.
Why not say that you bought such and such a model and tell how well you enjoy shooting it for what it is.
I enjoy my Smiths for being Smiths. If it it came with a lock, so be it. I would just like to see folks enjoy shooting instead of telling all the lengths they go to too get a non IL firearm.

Well, just like scuba diving (which I thoroughly enjoy), I still want to know as much as I can about the gear that's keeping me alive, the advantages and disadvantages of different styles and models and any "tweeks" I can make to make the gear better and the diving more enjoyable and safer. If they're like me, most new members are on this board for knowledge and opinions from those with more experience.

Because this is Smith and Wesson forum. There are plenty of general gun boards. You want specifics, history, detail then post here.

No problem with your thinking. It seems like half the folks on here are beating a dead horse when it comes the the IL. Why keep bringing it up? Why not talk about the gun for what it is?
I have Smiths with and without the IL. They are tools, they are enjoyment. The way it looks on this forum to lots of new members is that they purchased an inferior fiearm if it has the lock. They sell it and move on to some other brand. The important thing is, this is a Smith & Wesson forum. Talk "up" the gun's, don't belittle them.
