I just sent my 325sc 45acp to S&W customer service via UPS. S&W sent me a shipping tag and all shipping was paid for by them.

My 325sc has a crack in the frame below the forcing cone area. We'll see what they're able to do. I've only fired PMC 200 grain factory rounds thru the gun.

My main concern is whether they can replace the frame. If they can, I beleive I'll have to re-register the gun with local PD because the serial # will be different. If they don't have any frames on hand (supposedly they only made 300 of the 325sc), then what?

You will get the same S/N on the frame, they also should have the program on hand to make a frame if need be. I bet it is back in 10 days .

Not being critical but "should have the program" doesn't necessarily mean they have the program.

I've been shooting and buying Smiths since 1974 or so. I've always respected the company thru it's many interations.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Always interesting. Most people are pretty satisfied on relatively new guns. Less so on older, out of production guns. They have a reputation to uphold. They seem to be pretty concerned about that. But there are some instances where they can't supply the same product. They almost always make some kind of adjustment. If its a different caliber or barrel length, yes, you might need to re-register it, depending on your state laws. Keep all communications from them to take with you if that is necessary.

well four weeks to the day, I received my 325sc
back from Customer Service,
and here is the letter enclosed;

"We have received your model 325 in our service department for examination" "The handgun has been reviewed by two revolver Technicans and found to be within our manufacturing specifications." "There are no cracks in the forcing cone area." "You may see stress marks on the metal , but that is normal wear." "No reapirs have been performed on your handgun."

I know I'm getting older and the eyesight ain't waht it used to be, but stress marks? If not a crack, it's sue one hell of a scratch!

Unfortunately I don't have a digital camera for pics. Maybe it is a deep scratch, just doesn't look like it to me.

Man, if one had access to a magnaflux, your gun would sure be a candidate. That would beat having it separate at the wrong time, should it really BE a crack. FWIW.

I don't think Scandium can be magnafluxed, only magnetis alloys can. I believe Fluorescent Dye penetrant can be used, that is what is dione to non-magnetic alloys.

Dave - You don't need anything special to tell if your frame is cracked! If you open the cylinder, you should be able to turn the barrel with hand pressure only. A barrel in a cracked frame has nothing to hold it in place. Try to turn it out of the frame, of course, not in. Either way, you will notice it is LOOSE.
