I am going to start a search for a Md 66 with a 3 inch barrel and I would like to know if any of these were made that were pinned and recessed. If you have one for sale please let me know. I will post a WTB ad soon.

Good luck. The 3" barrel guns are sought after. I'm looking for one myself.

I can't give you a definitive answer, but my 3" 66-2 is neither pinned nor recessed.

With the 66-2 S&W did away with pinned barrels and cylinder counterbores; I'm not sure if any 3" versions were made as 66 no-dashes or 66-1's. The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson doesn't mention any.

The answer is no. None were pinned and recessed to my knowledge. I looked and looked for one and picked up a NIB one a few months ago at a very good price. I have seen them running from $700 up to as much as $1000. They are very hard to locate too.

The best of the 3" 66's is the 66-4 with case fired hammer and trigger. The 66-4 was also the last run for the hammer mounted firing pin. This one is mine, purchased new a few months back then customized.

Here is mine. Ported, trilijon performance center 1 of 300 they tell me. (66-3)

Hey bravastar1
The simple answer is "NO". The first time the 3" barrel was on a 66 was in May of 1985. This was a run of 4195 guns made for Ashland Shooters Supply, Ashland, Ohio. These guns are a mod 66-2 and the -2 is the engineering change which removed the pinned barrel and the recessed cylinder.

Here is my -2 Ashland run that I bought after seeing it in Shotgun News in 85 for 275.00 or so. By far the best all around S&W I own!! I never get tired of looking at her.

I don't think any of them are pinned and recessed. I bought this one about 6 months ago for $500 from the original owner. He told me the barrel length was 2-1/4 inches, evidently measuring from muzzle to frame. I could see that it was 3 inches. He was a rifle guy, and only had one revolver.

From this angle it almost looks like a 2.5" model.

No, it is 3 inches. I have a 2.5 inch 66-3, and here is a shot of both together (with different grips)

All a matter of opinion of course, but I think the 66-2 is a better gun. At least it is better looking because the angle for the front ramp is less. I have recently sold 2 M66 3 inchers on the classifieds, a NIB 66-4 for 795 shipped and a ex. cond. 66-2 for $750 shipped. They are cool guns, but I still prefer the 2.5 inch.
