I suspect that most are tucked away in someones holster or pocket and the rest in a safe somewhere.

Besides the one in my safe, there is one that a gentleman has been dragging to the PGCA gun shows for at least a year. He has had, I think, 400.00 on it. I didn't think this is unreasonable. I just can't convince myself I need two of them.

I've got one in my safe. It was picked up via the forum classifieds here about 6 months ago and was lucky enough to have the seller be local, so we did a FTF. I can't remember now if I gave the seller $295 or $395 for it?? I can't remember the fella's user ID either. If you were the seller of this gun to me, shoot me a PM so I can update my records. We met at my PD, you were in the flooring business. I got your card buried somewhere around here.

Mine has the day off today so it rests in the safe. It alternates with the 940 or 40 classic as my carry gun.

I gave mine to my daughter when she turned 21 about 5 years ago.

Where are you searching? There are 3 on Gun Broker right now. There are two on Guns America.
I am sure there are more to find if we look harder.

WOW, I didn't realize these little guns where so limited. I've got one NIB in the safe...note to self, another none lock revolver to keep in safe .
Cheers,
Sam

I look harder than you. GA only has one and it has NO picture and the seller wont respond to E-mails.
GB wants $695 for one of them, the other one is already at $505 with 8 days left, and the other one is a bead blasted ***.
Sorry... I am not looking for a ***, or a $700 model 640................
And I am not buying sight unseen.

Sorry about that. I took the meaning of your original post, "I have been searching for one to no avail. I just wonder what happended to them all?, to mean that you could not find any. I was just trying to point you in the right direction of a few.
I now realize from your follow up message that you meant there are no really pristine pre-lock 640s to be had for really low prices. That statement I am in total agreement with.

I saw one in a tiny little, old-fashioned gun shop in Georgia about a year ago. A little, wooden building in a tiny, tiny town. You probably all know the type.
I was looking for no lock Smiths and saw his modest selection of new J frames.
Then, lo and behold, in another cluttered display case, kind of tucked under some stuff, sat another Centennial, WITHOUT the damn weep hole on the left side.
"What's that, and is it for sale?"
He replied, "Well, I kind of had it sitting off to the side, but I guess I'd sell it." "It's a .38 Spl. 640," he continued, "in like new condition." It was too.
He wanted about the same price as the new 642 with the damn weep hole on the left side too!
Smart man!

Posted this info in your classifieds thread as well.
Someone elses original post and I saved the info.
quoting:
Today I used an accurate electronic scale to weigh my J-frames and some accessories. Guns were weighed more than once, to verify the numbers. Regardless of what grips came from the factory, ALL OF THE GUNS WERE WEARING HOGUE BANTAM RUBBER GRIPS (like the 340 has from the factory) when they were weighed. Guns were empty. All weights rounded to the nearest 1/10 ounce. Results:
317 2", pre-lock: 10.1 oz
340PD: 11.3 oz
340SS or M&P340: 13.3 oz
640 no dash: 20.7 oz
640-3: 21.6 oz
If you replace the Hogue rubber Bantam grips with something heavier, here is the increase:
Uncle Mike's rubber boot grip: add .7 oz
Uncle Mike's rubber long grip from current 340-3: add 1.3 oz
Ammo:
five rds Winchester 110 JHP: 2.2 oz
five rds Speer 135 +P Gold Dot: 2.4 oz
five rds Winchester 158 LHP: 2.6 oz
Hopefully, everyone carries ten or fifteen rds total.
Bianchi Speed Strip: .2 0z
Safariland speed loader: .4 oz
HKS speed loader: .6 oz
Uncle Mike's #3 pocket holster: .8 oz
Safariland #25 pocket holster: 1.8 oz
I previously sold my Kramer pocket holster but it was much heavier.
It's interesting that the 340PD is .7 oz lighter than S&W claims, while the 340SS/M&P340 are exactly what they claim.
Also, the weight difference between the two versions of the 640 is less than an ounce, I would have predicted it to be greater.
Hope this helps someone...

I am not looking for a "pristine" one at a really low price..... I am just looking for nice one at a REASONABLE & FAIR price! $695 is nowhere near reasonable or fair IMO.
