Question S&W Adjustable front Sight Question

I just bought and I am waiting delivery of a 586 with the 4 way adjustable front sight that I have been told was used for metallic Silhouette shooting. I'd like to hear from members who have them and their thoughts on them.

I have a 686 with a 6" barrel with the adjustable front sight. The previous owner removed (and lost) the rear sight and added a Leopold scope. You are correct, the 586/686 with the adjustable front and rear sights were set up for metallic silhouette shooting, but I've never used mine for that. My 686 is a real tack driver.

Best of luck,

Dave

Default Mod 29-3 w/AFS

Here is my mod 29-3 w/10 5/8" barrel which is the first gun to have the adjustable front sight for silhouette shooting. This gun is now used every year for deer hunting and the optics on top is a red dot for low light.

The mount is a see thru which allows me to use the iron sights. Position 4 is set for 200 yds and position 3 is set for 100 yds. Position 2 and the red dot are set for 50 yds.

When you set the sights, set position 1 on the AFS by pressing down on the rear of the front sight and move the wheel to #1. Pick a load (and don't change), then adjust the sight to hit at 25yds. Insure when you are done the front sight is high and the rear sight is low. Move out to 50yds, set the wheel to #2, and adjust the front sight set screw with an allen wrench moving the sight down. Move to 100yds and set #3. Move to 200yds and set #4. Always use the same ammo and use the same hold on the target and after position 1 adjust the front sight only!

This is 2 guys, 2 days, and 2 29-3s!
