Default Even Roy Jinks had trouble....

Hello all,

It has been a long time since I posted a thread or, quite honestly, visited the forum. But that dose not mean my passion for collecting things that go !*Bang*! has diminished. On the contraire, it's been kicked up a few notches in the past few months, allow me to explain.
I had the money to do a little shopping for a few collectibles in the form of some .44mags 3 months ago. Well, I purchased a pair of Performance Center 629's that are in NIB condition. Obviously I knew that when your dealing with S&W's PC, your getting quality stuff. Jump forward a few months, a week ago to be exact, and finally getting the" book" by Supica/Nahas, I looked up those 629's I got 3 months prior. Hold on to your hats because mine went flying when I looked up 170026 on Page 358 only 100 made and then 15min later, 103601 Lew Horton Special on page 259 only 30 made !!(Take some time to look them up)
If I am not mistaken, these are 2 of the 3 most scarce Performance center revolvers listed in this book. I will post pictures soon. I started this thread because I think I tracked down the most scarce one, the 629 "Avenger" 170058 only 26 made. I need some advice because the one that was listed on GunBroker http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=130672622 has a fluted cylinder and the description in the book describes one with an Unfluted cylinder. All of the numbers check out from the limited information the book gives about this 629-4. I called Roy Jinks and after looking up the product code, even he had no new information about this "Avenger" 629. In fact, the book had MORE information then S&W's computer records that Mr. Jinks used. I should point out that I bid on the 629-4 Avenger that Mat Fugate had on GunBroker and Won the auction! Even if this 629-4 turns out NOT to be the real deal Avenger 1 of 26, I still have a LH Performance Center 629-4 that I KNOW they made a relatively few of. You win some & you lose some, I just had to bid & win this 629-4 "avenger" that Fugate put up for Auction just because it COULD be the real deal and complete the last 3rd of the 3 most scarce PC revolvers that are listed in the "Standard Catalog of S&W 3rd edition".
Please share any information, rumor and/or fact that you may have about the 629-4 "Avenger" on page 358.

Thanks.

I don't have any additional info on you guns, but I have found a few things in the book that don't match up with what really is. In another event I recently had was the new 686-6 w/3" barrel was made with fluted cly. but I know of at least 3 that had unfluted cyl. and they were all sold under the same product code. So I am sure that it is possible that one of those guns may have had a fluted cyl. Just a thought.

Default Interesting.....

Neat guns, but I'd be curious to know where the seller came up with the 1 of 26 number. Lew Horton had those made, here's a copy of their flyer that says 300 made, and they were advertising "only 30 left" at the time they did this flyer.

It could be a different model, which is part of the problem with the PC production in later times, they would change a minor feature (grips, sights, finish) and voila! - a new model.

Never heard of the Avenger name being attached to a PC product.

Default Smithnut is da man

Thanks allot for the reply!!

On page 358 in the standard catalog S&W 3rd ed. the Avenger is a Performance Center revolver that has an Unfluted cylinder making it 1 of 26 made. The information you just provided just solved the mystery!! They made 300 quadraports and I suspect 26 of them had UNFLUTED cylinders. Either way, you answered a VERY important question of mine. Fugate's auction description was flawed and the BOOK had it right in describing the Avenger having an UNFLUTED cylinder, making it 1 of 26 made. The 629-4 that I won from Fugate is NOT an Avenger. I hold no grudge against Fugate, it was just one of those VERY ambiguous situations. The cool thing is now the facts are out for all to see.

Default Totallllly confyzzzzzzzed

velomax101 Help, your numbers don't work right! ? ! ? ! ? You listed,
product code #170026 pg358 100 made(not in my book)
product code #170058 pg358 26 made
product code #103601 pg259 30 made
All three products codes are listed on page 260. On pages 259 & 260 product code #103601 is referred to as a 4" gun or maybe a 3" SB gun. Your pics, on photobucket and the thumbnails, show product code #103601 as a 3" barrel RB gun! You also posted the same pic under the 629-4 and 629-3. Are both sets of pics of the same gun? Smithnut, do you have a product code on the gun in your pic?

Default Thanks for the help

Thank you for clearing up some of the fog! I believe you have found an error in "the book"! Page 259 states product code 103601 " reported as square butt", yours is clearly a round butt! Mr Nahas told me, in strictest confidence over a beer one evening, that "we(meaningSupica & Nahas) make mistakes too"! I hope you are collecting ALL the 629s in 3" barrel length? I would love to see that picture!
Thanks,jcelect

A quote from "3rd edition Standard Catalog S&W page 259" left column mid way up to be exact

* Model 629, Lew Horton Special: Reported as square butt, unfluted cylinder, 3" full-lug barrel, ported with trigger stop, Hogue grips, and Performance Center stamp with product code 103601 and special serial number prefix of "LHM" reportedly c. 1995. It's unclear to us whether this is the same variation with the same product code listed later as a 4" barrel Lew Horton Special with 30 units made c. 1997.

That is the beauty about this revolver, evrything in the description is present; it is not just about being a round or squqre butt... 1. The box states it is "listed" as a 4inch barrel, yet it has a FULL 3" lug-barrel-Check 2. product code & "LHM" prefix match-Check 3. The box states it is a square butt-check 4. Unfluted, trigger stop, Hogue grip & PC stamp-Check

It is all there: The Next time you all are thirsty for beer please, contemplate this revolver or just email this thread to them. I would love to know what the Authors think about it. BTW, I purchased both the 629-3 & 629-4 from the same person and the combat grips I got from ebay. Thanks.

Oh-Ya. What did you think about that 629-3 Comp 2?
