Default Polishing a 686

I recently picked up a 686-3. it's in great shape, but I want to polish it with Mother's Mag polish. I have done the same to other stainless S&W's I have owned, and they polished up very quickly. The 686 seems to be taking a lot longer. I have spent probably an hour on it so far, and it's a bit shinier, but not what I have accomplished with other guns. I don't want to use a Dremel or anything. Is there a better product? I have a tube of Flitz, but the Mother's did a better job on the other guns I have used it on.

I polished my 686 no dash with Mother's mag polish and it did take longer then my model 66 and 67. You can use both flitz and Mother's mag polish in alternating applications. I just did my 686 while sitting in front of the TV watching a car race.

It may take 8 hours depending on the starting finish the 686 had on it.
Keep working on it and then post pics.
Watch out for the thumb cramps!

I used Wenol - metal polish with protective wax coating on my 686.
It took about a hour.

DLC’s S&W 686 L-Frame – Polished.

It takes a little time but it's worth it.

Sometimes it take a long while. This Model 66-2 has had 8 applications of Mother's Mag Polish. Every now and then I take it out and give it another application. It's still not quite where I want it, but it looks good enough that it's often mistaken for a nickel Model 19.

Hi kbm6893,
I purchased the Wenol from my local hardware store.
Be sure to purchase the right product by Wenol.

"Wenol-Metal Polish with Protective coating".

I just did a Google and there are a lot of options on where to purchase.

I polished my 625 with Flitz and now it looks like nickel . One thing though. It took off alot of the lazer writing on it. Anybody know what S&W charges to re-due the writing ?

Spent some time today with Mother's and a new rag. Looks much shinier now, but I;m gonna keep going. I've even decided to leave the stock wood target grips on it. Just looks so much more classic. I have a set of Pachmeyers I took off the 66 I just sold, but they're staying off for now.

After reading this blog I decided to work on my gun and bring the blog to the front again.
I wanted to polish my 686-4 and do a trigger job. I saw several videos on how to disassemble
and reassemble my revolver. After watching them multiple times it seemed easy enough which
it was. I filed/smoothed out the areas they showed you and I polished the rest with Mothers
Mag and Aluminum Polish. I replaced the springs with the Wolffs spring pack. After the trigger work,
the polishing and the Wolff springs it’s like night and day. I didn’t like shooting the gun double
action. Now I’ll use it double action only. The trigger is that light and smooth.
I started polishing the gun by hand using Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish. Spent about 10 hours
on it by by hand giving it around 20 coats. Then I used my Dremel on the trigger and hammer area. Then
I bought some buffing wheels from Harbor Freight to use in my drill. I thought the buffing wheels were
nice for the price. They held up well. Someone on one of these blogs said he thought Flitz was better
than any other polish. So I bought some Flitz. I gave the gun 3 coats of Flitz. I thought it made the
shine look dull. So back to the Mothers. So after around 30 or so coats of polish I topped it off with 3
coats of Renaissance wax. The gun really came out nice. I didn’t want to put the black Hogue rubber
grips back on. So I shopped around online. I saw some Hogue rosewood grips for $100. I also saw rosewood grips from Pachmayr on Ebay for $30 delivered. For the price I’d give them a try. When they came I noticed they were a very high gloss shine. They looked much better the the Ebay photo. They are slippery but I think I can overcome that. They do look nice on the gun. I’m sorry but I prefer revolvers to autos. I do have a S&W 40 S&W Sigma. But I still like my 66 and 686.

Wenol is great! Never used on a gun, but back in the day I polished up some Centerline satin aluminum mag wheels I didn't need for my 1972 Nova. The speed shop sold polished aluminum Centerline wheels for $125 at the time. They gave me $100 for mine. It takes out surface rust on chrome plated wheels. I'd imagine it's the ticket for minor scuffs and for polishing revolvers.
