Default N-Frame Grips Right Side Relief Cut

I have a set on N frame Goncalo Alves Target Stocks with the football cut on the left panel. and the scallop relief cut on the right side. They are marked with a date stamp of 1984. They are gorgeous. They are not original to this 27-2 4-inch. I was interested in knowing on what model they might have been on originally.

They seem to resemble stocks that would have been on a guns with some type of engraving on the side plate. Just curious, any speculation is welcome.

Hi, The grip on the left side of the gun with the football is from the 60's and 70's..The right grip is from the 1990's speedloader cut out on both sides of the grips started around the 1990's but I do not know when. They were an option for the N frames.

As I said in my original post, they have a 1984 stamp inside the right grip. If it is like some of my others that would be the approximate manufacturing date. They are also book matched, from the same piece of wood so they are a set. I am wondering if they may have come off of a commemorative or other special piece that had some embelishment on the side plate. I do not have any of my books with me here in Afghanistan, and I don't remember seeing anything like this. I have seen similar on some of the various 50th Anniversary models or Police commeratives.

Default Grips

The grips with a relief cut on the top of the right panel were used on guns that had some sort of logo or crest engraved on the side plate. Usually these guns were a commemorative or presentation type gun! The grips would not be on any certain models.

The Special Products List shows almost 9,000 guns those stock could have come on. Most were 24-3's with a few 29's thrown in(1000 were Lew Horton's). 200 sound really interesting, cased with call bead front sights. It does not say who or what they were for. If you're really curious, they are all triple-alpha so you could contact S&W as they should be in the computer. SKU's are #100782, #100785 and #101205.

There is no serial number on the grips, just the date. Anyway they are made from a flat out gorgeous piece of wood. They look very nice with nickel.

One a a whole bunch of guns that had a shield or other bit of engraving on the side plate, hence the cut out to not cover it. Things like the 544 44-40 Texas Wagon Train Commerative etc come to mind in an "N" frame of about that era.

They aren't mismatched the left side is the regular foorball ejector relief cut prior to about 1984 and the use of the full speed loader cut out on the left side.

The only thing I find unusual is that they are factory checkered. Most of the grips in this style were smooth ala the Texas Ranger Model 19-3 and many others.

If I remember correctly that style of grips were used on Police Dept. Commeratives.

They usually had a copy of the agencys badge on the sideplate, the gris were cut out so the badge could be made large.

I realize this is an old thread, but I have a set of grips for which I would like to get the right side relieved to prevent covering the logo. Is there anyone who does such work?
