I love the S&W model 64 four inch the best, but I still have a few 3" around.

I purchased a few at the equipment section all are very well fitted with clean action.

Over the years I did see a bunch of fake NY-1, lot of cylinder bind, my guess some gun stores sent out a bunch of frames to get the NY-1 stamp from some guy having a bad day with the hammer and the yokes were mixed up and made proper fitting near impossible for a quack gunsmith. oh well
the fake stamps are easy to spot.

When a gun was purchased from a private vendor it was supposed to be taken to the range and approved/authorized by a range instructor. The only modification allowable was the switching of the wood grips to a rubber approved brand, ( basically Pachymyr ). Some of the precincts had hundreds of cops and you can see the logistics of trying to account for every gun. When I left the Dept had 45,000 members. So that's basically why all these guns have rubber grips and the ( **** ) wooden ones were discarded right into the garbage can under the desk. As my Alzheimer fades and comes will add more. One last thing, with the transition to 9mm's I believe the dept gave you the gun for free, but you were required to buy and show the Desk the leather gear for the gun Belt, Holster etc etc which cost about $150. The transition course from revolver to 9mm was 3 days at the range. Many habits at the range were drilled into you and after 20 plus years I still do. However, here in Florida those habits are deemed wrong, inappropriate, and even dangerous, but that's another thread.

S. Kelly, what up my friend, Like the prefix on my 64 above lol......Seriously, the 640's as you know are popular, the NYPD variants even more so especially the 640-2 (J Magnum) .38 Special as the box was marked NYPD.............

I'm retired NYPD as well and was given the choice between the S&W 64 and the Ruger GPNY (GP100 in spurless). I chose the 64 before eventually switching to the Glock. I like Rugers and own a Service Six in .357, but the Ruger just looks WRONG with the spurless hammer, and particularly with those rubber Pachmayr grips on it. The S&W still has flowing, pleasing lines, even with the bobbed hammer. The Ruger (the Service Six especially), looks deformed with the spurless hammer and big rubber grips.

I purchased 2 model 36's with 3" heavy barrels from the equip section back in 82. They were $61 bucks each, were originally offered as service revolvers (on duty) for police women. I gave one to my father-in-law who had a carry permit (jeweler) and I still have one. BTW, the serial numbers are sequencial.

So, without checking, I would figure the ES had guns ny-1's in stock long after the recall.
