Default 686-5 with 5" full-lugged barrel

Does anyone have a pic of one of these? The product code is 104098. This was a 7-shot 686 produced in late 2000 or early 2001. It came with a fluted cylinder and a red Hi-Viz front sight. Anyone have an idea of how many of these were produced. Smith never did produce very many 686's with a five inch barrel.

Must be rare, I never saw one yet. Sounds pretty cool.

Default Here's a non-original 5" M686-4.....

not being a fan of the later guns, I was able to buy one of the full lug 5" barrels from S&W (or was it GunParts ??) for this project. The -4 is my favorite M686 config ( 6 shot), so this project was envisioned for some time before finding all the right parts, to include forged standard hammer and trigger and Patridge front sight.

I was hoping for a 5" to go with the CS-1 & CS-3 in the collection, this one came out OK.

Check this gun out. The date of manufacture is real close to a previous poster's, but take a look at the barrel markings. Left side appears clean and the right side markings are lasered. End label of box certainly indicates one of these small runs done by Smith for stocking dealers in the correct time frame.

Thanks for the GB link. Yes, its interesting that it has the same product code and close serial numbers, but mine is roll-marked and the one you pointed out is laser etched. I noticed that the "Special Order" number is different also, 0349 vs. 0342. Nice gun although I never really warmed up to it and prefer the earlier (no-dash) L frames.

Heres a couple of my 5 inch 686-5's one with classic style Bbl, and one with the half lug. Both are 7 shot. Best of all....No Lock!

Mule88................What's the story on your 5" half-lug? Was that a rebarrel of a 686-5 plus frame or a recontoured full lug barrel? I've simply never heard of a -5 with the half-lug 5" barrel. That said, Smith does odd guns upon occasion. I remember being in a South Florida pawn shop back in the late 90's. An odd 625 in 45Colt was sitting in the case. This gun had a 5 or 5.5" barrel and had the power port.........the one big hole on the top, not a Magnaport. My SCSW#3 has nothing about this version. As I was big on shooting my 44Mags at the time and not especially interested in a 45Colt, I simply looked it over and set it back down.

I had smith put a 5 inch bbl on my 686-5 frame with the red ramp instead of the fiber optic sight you would normally see on that bbl. It cost a little but was worth it to me to have it without the lock.

Tell me more about the 5". I'm planning to rebarrel my 6" modified no-dash. The 5" sounds like a perfect compromise. I was thinking about going to a 4" "620" bbl or a full lug 4" as an all-around gun since the 6" is feeling a little bbl. heavy these days.

I personally own a 1 of 500, 5" barreled, six-shot Model 686 that is/was a Bill Davis special run called the "National Match". It has a full lugged barrel, square butt frame, unfluted cylinder, pinned patridge front sight with fully adjustable square notch rear (both black) with a "man target" engraved on the right side plate, and "National Match" engraved on the right side of the barrel, with special Bill Davis rubber grips. It has the smoothest double action I've ever tried. It is, and will remain, unfired. I've never seen another one anywhere.

I purchased one new and still have it. I emailed S&W with this same question after having a master action job done on it. As per S&W service, the count is close to 1200.

Now you have. I have the original rubber Bill Davis grip for it but prefer nice wood. Here's another shot of it with some perfectly book-ended dual speedloader cut-outs along with my other 686-3s.

You are 100% correct regarding the gun's action smoothness. And they are very accurate, too!

I like seeing these older threads resurrected.
