Did any of you see the write-up and picture in the American Rifleman on the new S&W TRR8. It's a 8 shot .357 revolver.

It has a Picatinny rail on top and a rail on the bottom. The one pictured had a red dot scope on top and a Hi-intensity light on the bottom rail.

Scandium Frame, 5" barrel. MSRP.....$1414.00. The way it looks, it would be hard to carry. I guess someone could make a holster for it.

I don't think that it is actually new. It's been shown on the website and in catalogs for years. I have no idea how many they sell. The rail on top for an optic makes sense if one wants to use it as a hunting gun. The light rail... less so... since it risks putting digits forward of the barrel/cylinder gap.

Someone must have liked the looks of old Snake's gun in "Escape from LA".

I think that the fully decked out configuration is intended for some Tactical Operator's pouch.

I can't even envision a holster that would handle it.

I read the review, and remain unimpressed with the concept, for several reasons. Firstly, despite the "unobtainium" alloy frame, by the time you add the electronic optic aiming widget and the light/laser module, the thing is so bulky and heavy and unwieldy that you might better be looking at a shotgun or carbine for similar purposes. Secondly, you can get superior "firepower" in terms of round count, and widgets in more ergonomically correct configuration with semiautos. Thirdly, it's still "just" a .357, a round that makes sense in a J-frame, but probably not in an envelope as large as tested in the write-up.

I use mine without the rails but with a light and laser it would be a good nightstand gun. I have three eight shot 357s, a 27, 627 and the TRR8. I would rather shoot the TRR8, the weight balance and feel are just the way I like them.

I think the intent was a one handed weapon for the first thru the door entry team. I have seen the man with the shield line up the sights to fire with the slide to close to the shield. When the slide comes back striking the shield, short stroking the slide, making the auto a single shot weapon at the most inappropriate time. 8 rounds of anything beats 1 round of 40 if the bad guys are shooting at you. The TRR8 would be my weapon of choice with the shield.

I don’t have the TRR8 but my nightstand gun was a 4 inch 625 for years with a separate flashlight and Crimson trace grips. I have become a M&P auto fan and now have a 40 with an attached light/laser on my bed stand.

I didn't see the American Rifleman write-up, but would love to fire a 327TRR8. The reliability of a revolver combined with the 8-round capacity makes it a cool alternative to Glocks or Commander-sized 1911s.
More kick with the lightweight Scandium frame? Who cares?
'Wanna get one...this year!

I had the 'gonna get one' virus a couple years ago. The chance to shoot a 627 V8 along side with a TRR8 changed my choice.

While I like the TRR8, and have fired them with the bells, whistles & kitchen appliances attached, I haven't come across a decent deal on one. Yet.

On the other hand, the 627PC is my all time favorite DA revolver. I shoot speed steel & ICORE with it. Of course it is a different creature than the TRR8.

That is correct, it is a shield gun. It was actually based on requests of some LE departments. It also comes standard with the ability to use moon clips as a standard. The bottom pic rail is usually used with a moon clip holder for reloads.

I'm genuinely curious about what a bulky red dot scope adds (other than looks) that CT laser grip wouldn't improve upon.

The idea of a 'shield gun' makes a lot of sense, but for me I think a laser grip would be a superior choice for bulk reduction and holsterability.

I rented both of these at Scottsdale Gun Club last month. The 627PC had the shorter wood grips. I liked the comfort of the TRR8 much better, and shot more accurately with it. Perhaps with rubber grips it would have been closer. In terms of recoil, neither were objectionable with 158gr. 357 loads.

I would like to shoot a few of the other PCs (like the 627 V8 and the R8) before buying, but at this point I would go the TRR8.

Why would you want to hang on that "stuff" on a handgun...extra weight, bulk, and more stuff to go wrong when SHTF.

The more you complicate the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain...remember the K.I.S.S. principle.

I see WAY too much "pointless" equipment on firearms today...there is even a handgun bayonet for a Glock!!!
