57-1 .41mag
A buddy has a S&W 57-1, 6", .41 mag for sale. I just got my first Smith, and it's like eating chips.....I'm already craving another. He is asking $600 for the gun in 95% condition. Any thoughts on this price? Thanks, Bob.

$600 for a 95% gun is alittle high. Just curious, how did you come up with that percentage. One man's 95% may be another man's 99%, and vica versa. A true 95% gun will be showing a lot of cosmetic wear, scratches etc.

95% is just my uninformed guess as to wear and tear on the blueing. There might be one or two very small scratches, but otherwise darn near perfect. So I guess it's between 95-99%. Bob.

I agree, $600 is a little high. I just got a 57 no dash for 480 otd. About 93-95 %. Bearing in mind that guns are still climbing and no end in sight.

In the condition you describe here, I'd say it's probably closer to a 98% gun. That said, it is still a little on the high side for a dash 1 gun. If you like it though, and you know the guy, and you want it, buy it! It's not too out of line right now, and guns just keep going up, so it will catch up to the price soon enough.

Yeah, I'm a Cussler fan. No, the gun includes no extras. In the nothwest, people are goin nuts. I have a buddy who sold a new model Blackhawk in .30 carbine for $650, no box. Nothin special about it, either. Gun shows selling primers for $65/1000! .22lr is tough to get as well.

Well if it makes you feel any better I just paid $800 for a 6" because it is the only M57 I have seen in my area in the years that I have been looking. Mine is minty for sure but also no box and papers ect.

At that price, it would be in my gun safe right now! I would consider just about any adjustable sight N-frame gun in excellent condition to be a good deal at $600.

Oh, it's pretty, no doubt. But I just got a 629-3, 6.5" for $500, and money is a little tight now. Don't know how long I have on this one. Also thinkin about a Ruger new model Blackhawk in .357 with a 4 5/8" barrel for $300 in mint shape, without box.

I'd buy it for that price. Great revolver and an extremely underrated round. I wouldn't sell my no dash 6" 57 thats seen years (27) of carry and thousands of rounds for 1K.

Buy it, assuming it looks good in the 98% + condition (ensure nobody has sprung the sideplate, or otherwise dinked with it (such as filing on the trigger sear such that with a little pressure the hammer falls).
I believe these (M57s) are the best of the N frame, in that the cartridge size is ideally suited to the N frame. The .41 is underrated. Love nor money would get any of the three of my Model 57s.

The gun will be coming to me for a look see on Monday, have to suffer until then. Another guy at work has first crack at it, but I don't think he will go for it, since it isn't stainless. Cross your fingers for me....

Mine are crossed for you. It's a no brainer at that price! Jump on it like a fly on ****!!! Have 3 .41 mags. It's my all time favorite caliber and they're all keepers!
Good luck and have a great/anxious weekend!
SG
Not a great pic and don't do them justice. Have to take some individual shots but these might help tidy you over for the weekend. They are like Lays. You can't have just one!!!

6 bills is about the going rate around these parts but I would see if he would go at 550. Like one of the others said, a M57 of any variant is about as scarce as hen's teeth; not to mention the gun's cost is nothing compared to keeping it fed in ammo. That is unless you reload.

Just picked up a 57-0 (over stamped from a 29-2 frame) but all S&W with pinned barrel and recessed cylinder in 8 3/8 for $530 OTD in SE PA. It goes with my 57-1 in 6". However, on hunting the web, I found a very interesting site where a 0.41 Special load was being "played with". On further work turns out that Starline did a run of 0.41 Special headstamped brass and Reeds Ammo in OK City both sell a 0.41 Special loaded cartridge and the brass. So with some thought and modification of 0.41 Mag Lee dies I now have 200 0.41 Special loads that are a little slower than the original "Police" load for the 41 Mag. Great fun to shoot in either gun. It's mine!
Well, the drama is over, I picked up the 57-1 today. Beautiful revolver. Only thing I'm not wild about is the rubber grips, should be targets if I'm not mistaken. Here it is before a thorough cleaning. My guess is 95 percent, couple of tiny spots here and there, and Pachmayer grips, I believe they should be targets? Bob.
