Default 686 plus

Hey folks I'm new to the forum. I just have two questions
1. Is there anyway to tell when my gun was made (just bought it last week).
2. Is there anybody out there who has tried carrying a 4" 686 concealed? Thanks for any help you can give me

well first off welcome to the forum, and someone here very soon can tell you close to when it was made and a call to S&W definatly can, but you have a GREAT gun, spooky accurate, highly reliable and if you don't like the 4" for carry you can have a 3" installed

Hi, I cary a 3" N frame 45 as my daily carry gun. I hide it just fine. If I can hide that thing you can hide a smaller L frame 4" 686. The trick is to find a GOOD leather holster. You may have to buy several before you find one that is comfortable, concealable and holds the gun close to your body. LOBO gunleather is a great one. He is a member here, I have a holster from him...I love my holster it does everything I just said. As a cop I need my gun to be concealed...So check around and I am sure there will be pleanty more suggestions here.

Thanks for the welcome. I normally carry a P239 but just bought this 686 plus with night sites. Couldn't resist after the guy at the gun shop let me hold it.

Default 686

Welcome to the Forum. A 686 is a great gun. Hard to hide if you're of slender build. I carry mine exposed in a S&W leather holster, right side, I bought many years ago for my Model 28. Don't have the 28 anymore.

I'm only 5'7" and I carry a 5" 629 concealed. My first primary carry gun was a 4" 586 (same gun, but carbon steel, mine was nickel plated). You can carry whatever you want, just dress around the gun. I carried mine in a FIST kydex/leather hybrid IWB holster. Get one with the cant, buy your jeans a little large, a loose fitting shirt with a busy pattern, and get a good gunbelt. I use a 1 3/4" dual layer bullhide belt from www.thebeltman.net . Don't neglect buying a smaller gun as a back up and for when the 686 is too large to work.

Congratulations on choosing a serious fighting gun and welcome to the forum.

I spend a lot of time in the concealed carry forum and there are many of us who are more than happy to help you over there.

A big HOWDY from Indiana! I love my 4" 686, too.

I often carry my 4" 686P concealed. I have a brown leather holster that covers the trigger and has a thumb break over the hammer. I don't want to accidentally cock that bad boy when its on my hip. I wear an un-tucked shirt over the gun/holster and it is barely noticeable if you're looking for it. Most people are not looking for guns and I'm less paranoid about that than I used to be...I'm fairly confident nobody will ever notice any of my guns unless I carry open, and even then most wouldn't notice. Make sure you have a nice thick and wide belt to support the weight of the gun.

I have several handguns, and by far the 686P is the most accurate and most fun to shoot. I have Rosewood Hogue grips on it and it is probably my favorite gun that I've ever had. I say carry it and get used to your belt/britches sagging a little bit on the side on which you carry. Your untucked shirt will cover most of the important stuff if your pants fall down! Later, B

I carried a 4 inch, square butt, 686 for 14 years under a suit jacket or sports coat as a LEO, along with 3 speedloaders. Had a Pachmyr set of grips on it. It's easy to draw & an excellent weapon when you must use it.

Unless I missed it, I don't think anybody has yet answered your first question regarding the manufacture date. Yes, with the serial number and a copy of the Standard Catalogue of Smith and Wesson you can usually get the year of manufacture. List the SN and I or someone else will be happy to look it up for you.

Hey I appreciate it the s/n is dcy9114 with 686-6 underneath. Could you answer another question maybe. It came with a set of night sites on it with the letters MH3 on front and rear sites but no manufactures name just curious what they are.
