Default Problems with my 642

I recently bought a new 642 airweight and have experienced occasional problems with it firing. Every once in a while I can pull the trigger all the way back and there is no hammer fall. Mine is the fully enclosed hammer model, so I can't see it and am assuming the sear is not releasing and the hammer not falling.

Each time I opened the cylinder to see what might be wrong and the revolver functioned after reclosing the cylinder. I later noticed when dry firing that sometimes there was a very slight delay between pulling the trigger all the way back and the hammer falling.

I thought it might be the internal lock, which I had never touched before. I turned it on and off a few times and then torqued it down tight in the unlocked position. About 50 rounds later I had not had another malfunction and dry firing does not repeat the ealier problem.

I am wondering if maybe the recoil slightly engages the internal lock sometimes, but I am just guessing.

Is this the internal lock problem I have heard people refer to or is it something more serious?
Any comments would be appreciated.

It might be because of the lock. I've got the 637 Airweight. I use the key to make sure it is in the "unlock" position as far as it will go before I go to the range or carry it.

Sorry I don't know what the proplem is but I would
send it back to S&W. If you use it as a carry gun you could
get into trouble. Don

The first time my brother shot a 642, he had a similar problem. Turns out he was keeping his finger on the trigger too much and not letting it reset all the way before firing again. He was used to semi autos where you can keep the trigger half way compressed between shots.

Easy fix though if you're concerned about the lock.

Took me maybe 10 minutes to remove my father's lock.

S&W has the best customer service of any company in the industry. Contact them (someone above gave a particular person and phone number). They will pay shipping both ways and fix it/replace it almost always free.

Cordially, Jack

Thanks much for the input guys. I'm pretty sure I was letting the trigger reset. I guess I will send it back to S&W. It's a great little handgun.

no good %&*#$%^ing lock!!! I hate the lock. I'm tired of companies and gubermint trying to protect me from myself.
Regardless if the lock is at fault or not, it doesn't take but one ftf to lose trust in a firearm.
When folks quit buying new S&W's because of the lock, I bet the locks disappear or at least become optional.
That's why I will never buy another new locked smith unless it's a helluva bargain.

I bought a brand new 686P a few years ago that intermittantly did the same thing while dry firing. Without even pulling off the sideplate for a look, I sent it to the factory. It came back a couple of weeks later with repair slip that said they cleaned the internals. I figured that maybe there was something like loose metal shavings inside the lockworks that wasn't removed during manufacturing.

Well, I called S&W.

The particular gentleman I was referred to by Bonzo was busy so I spoke to another representative. After we discussed the situation he said there was probably a small burr on the sear or sear release and it has probably been worn off by breaking it in. He said if I get through another box of ammo without a recurrence I will be good to go. If it occurred again they would send the stuff for free shipping back to them

I think I could have insisted and they would have sent the mailing package but I decided to see if continued firing would restore my confidence in the gun.
