Question Matte black as "tough" as blue?

Is the matte black finish on the new 442's at least a durable as a traditional blue finish? I'll be picking up a new 442 in a couple of days and will probably holster it in a nylon or leather pocket holster.

I've had a 432PD (which is the .32 H&R Magnum version of the Airweight) for almost 2 years and in my opinion the black anodized finish has not been as durable as a blued steel frame revolver, especially in a nylon holster with it's relatively coarse weave.

The "sharp" leading edges and high spots of the frame and cylinder wear through quicker... the good news is that Birchwood Casey Aluminum Black touch up will get rid of shiny spots and match the original finish perfectly, unlike touch up cold blue on a blued gun, but it is not as durable as the original finish.

When it gets looking too shabby, I'll have one of the durable coatings like Cerakote or Robar's NP3 applied, or maybe even give it a whirl myself and try one of the spray and bake finishes in a can from Brownell.

Thanks, Gunhacker.

Is the matte black that is applied to the 442 the same as the matte black applied to the more expensive Smiths.

It doesn't matter what kind of holster you use they will all put wear on a revolver and that's just a fact of life. I've seen all forms of blued revolvers with a lot of wear on the high points of the cylinder and leading edges of the barrel.

I always tell people who are going to do concealed carry to buy a used revolver with typical holster wear that is mechanically perfect to go and use it for carry.

I dont mind if and when my revolvers get some holster wear because it gives your six gun character.

I have a 442 and a new 327PC 8 shot both wear the matte black finish. If you like your guns clean and unscratched don't buy a mattel black one. My 442 had some serious pocket holster wear after 6 months and the 327 scratches at the drop of a hat....
