Default S&W 66-2 Secret Service 3"

I bought an unusual Smith & Wesson Model 66-2 with a 3" barrel on Friday. It has The US Secret Service logo engraved on the right side plate,Trigger stop, Wide smooth trigger lanyard loop, Unusual grips and a brass dot front sight, along with 2 white dot rear.
Serial # AFK76xx

Does anyone know the story on these "Secret Service" marked Model 66-2 revolvers....... Can I assume that they were early/mid 1980's issue, or are they some sort of Retirement Watch type "gifts".....?

It looks to me like the gun was used by the Secret Service uniform division. The Secret Service has agents and a uniform division. The uniform division guards buildings such as the White House, US Mint and others.

Default Okay,,,,,

I didn't quite get a good view of the gun ,,could you post a few more pictures??

Joking aside ,, I have a model 66-2 3in. Ser.# AFK88xx.

I have the original box ,and the julian date is ,5108. Which should be
April 17th. 1985.

It is my assumption that mine was one of the first production 3in. 66s for Ashland arms, in 1985.
Your gun ,,being 1200 numbers earlier than mine ,begs the question;: was there a run prior to the 5000 for Ashland with the 'ALU' prefix??
(( page 230 of the S.C.of S.W. )

A factory letter will tell the whole story. We should send for them together ,with pictures and all.

P.M. me and we can talk if you like.

Regards ,,,Allen Frame

Secret Service UD does, indeed, secure the White House, but the US Mint has their own police force...the US Mint Police. USSS UD also protects the foreign embassies on "Embassy Row" in D.C., as well as travelling with Agents for large events (they work the magnetometers).

Default Julian date

Gunner your julian date ,,or spec ord # of 5121 would be the 121st. day of 1985.

The first # is the year, 5 for 1985. the next 3 numbers are days into that year ,,121 May 1st.

Wow talk about close, it seems our 2 were produced about 1 week apart.

You have a couple of real neat ones there. Keep the faith .

Regards ,,Allen Frame

Words fail to describe the profound hatred I currently harbor for this person. Jealousy always brings out the worst in me?
I apologize.
(I still hate him though!)
That's one of the grail guns.

I'm pretty much with Spotteddog...

No doubt, an amazing find. Now is when dude tells us he only paid $500 for it. Then we find him, and bludgeon him...

Just a 3 inch 66 is cool. This one is simply amazing. I'm certain the letter from S&W will be an eye opener.

Not a Govt issue weapon. Probably a "presentation/retirement" special order. This is not unusual in the USSS. If it was issued by the dept. I would have seen one - worked there from 1970 to 1991. Never saw a M66 bought by USSS. We had M19 for many years until the semi-autos took over. "Special orders" were given out as gifts if you were high enough on the Totem Pole.

VERY handsome revolver......and one of the finest civilian CC or LEO plain clothes revolvers ever made. Thanks for letting us see this one ! 3" K frames made before the lock are just about the perfect all-round handgun for concealment......in my not so important opinion.

- regards

Nice find....but if you carry it, just remember, you are obliged to jump in front of a bullet meant for someone else...so you may want to keep it as a safe queen.

I had a USSS Model 19 in my hands once-a co-worker took it off a guy in a stolen car that had just used it in a drive by. Nice gun, TH, red ramp insert/white outline rear (I think) and smooth finger groove combat grips. It had been stolen from an agent's hotel room along with his co-workers gun when they went to dinner while guarding then Presidential candidate Mike Dukakis. I wanted the grips real bad for my 2 inch Model 64 at the time.
