Default Model 19 grips

I have a model 19 square butt with wood grips. I think they are called combat grips? Anyway as bea-utiful as they are, I was thinking about putting on some rubber grips with finger slots. Any comments?
Thanks.

Over the years I have put a variety of rubber grips on various M19s. Over all I found that the covered backstrap botherd me a lot. The only grips I liked were a Houge style, two piece in black plastic that looked like their fingergrove monogrip. They fit perfectly BUT the plastic area containing the grip screw tended to contact the mainspring causing the occasional failure to fire on the first strike. A Pachmayr "gripper" model with exposed backstrap is my favorite for reliability. Even so I tend to prefer wood these days.

I keep the original style wood on the gun depending on what I am doing with it. Right now I have a set of Model 10 grips on it with the rounded bottoms and a Tyler Grip adapter. This works best for me for concealed carry and IDPA competition.

When the gun is sitting in the night stand I have a set of target grips on her. They just "look right".

Your 19 should have checkered targets, not combats. Combat stocks were smooth and will have finger grooves while targets will not have finger grooves and will be larger at the bottom of the grip than combats would be.

19s can be hard kicking guns if you are shooting 158 gr. .357 Magnums. I used to used Pachmayr presentation stocks on my 19s and 29s routinely, since I used to shoot a lot more than I do now. I still keep a couple pair around and will put them on the gun if I am going to shoot much.

As you say, they are not much to look at, compared to a pretty set of wood stocks.

I shoot my model 19 with the wood checkered grips and 158 gr mags. I must say the recoil is quite stiff but not bothersome really. I'm wondering if it is rather loud though to folks on either side of me because I noticed people starting to leave the indoor range shortly after I started. Hopefully that was just coincidental.

I've got Pachmayer presentations on my 66. They're ugly but they really soak up the recoil. I've never been a fan of finger groove grips. My hands are very large and I can't find finger grooves which match up well with my fingers.

Try a couple wheel-fulls from the 'ole 629 first then you'll have the range to yourself.
