Default Floating hand questions

I just picked up a NIB M625-3, and like several guns I have, is set up with a floating hand. When I sent previous guns to the Performance Center for an action job, they always replaced the floating hand with the fixed hand.

Any idea why ? While it looks to be more complicated to make, what other reasons, if any, caused S&W to replace them with the older design ?

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is a "floating hand?" Thank you.

Be safe.

The hand was set up on a stud so that it could rotate, not really sure what the objective was on this arrangement.

Almost all the ones I have seen produce a hitch in the action, about midway through the double action cycle. Replacing with a regular hand smooths the action immediately. It did not last too long, perhaps around a year or so. All the 627-0's that I have seen have had them. They were titled the Model of 1989, so the were installed in that time frame.

Her's a Picture I saved from this website a while back, 500 Magnum Nut posted it but I believe it was someone elses photo..
It shows a standard K Frame hand next to a L Frame floating hand.. I think the hump that cams the hand away from the ratchet is what you actualy feel in the trigger, The bushing in the trigger can be pulled out & a standard hand put in it's place of the correct width..
I know several L Frames had this hand but don't know why they changed it or discontinued it either?? I've seen 686s with them a couple of times..
Great Photo..

Default Floating hand

Great picture, Gary !

I'm going to try calling Smith tomorrow or Tuesday and see what they have to say.

I'll post their response.

It was an attempt to fix the carry up. You ever notice if you pull the trigger with your other hand the carry up may change or it could act like it's short. In my FAQs it's called "sing".

Anyway it's worked, but it was problematic so it was dropped.

Here are my FAQ notes:

FAQ's

handejector will get this up on a sticky soon.
