S&W Model 12 info?
Not sure if this is the correct forum as I do not know the year it was made. I only got a quick glance at a M 12, 4" barrel at the gun shop today. It appeared like new and had the box. It is a alloy 38 special.
Any info on value/price would be appreciated. My Blue Book is a year old. Are these "collectible" ?
Thanks

For some reason the model 12 has never been a collectable gun, I wish S&W would make them again!
They can crack the frame under the barrel, Thin Aluminum there, And it seems like real nice ones without box can sell in the 400 range.

The 2" RB version is highly desired for a carry piece, and prices lately have been around $500 for nice ones. Next most desired appears to be the 2" SB, of which there are many. Next the 4" RB, and last the 4" SB. The model 12-3 and older required special magna type grips because of the more narrow frame, but wrap around Uncle Mikes will cover them OK. I'd say prices vary between $300 and $500, based on the above.

The 2" Model 12 I picked up a few weeks ago has a flat latch and extremely nice diamond Magna's so I considered the $445 asking price reasonable. I ran a box of 158gr. lswc through it yesterday and it's a nice shooter. If the Model 12 isn't collectable, it should be...

RB = Round Butt
SB = Square Butt
It refers to the shape of the frame at the grip.

The advantage of the 12 is that it is
a 6 shot airweight. Mine is 12-1, and
it is a 2" RB and weighs 18oz.
I can carry in holster, and even in the
pocket on some clothing.
A 4" would not be to much heavier,
but it gives up some the carry advantages.
Mine is excellent shooting condition, and it would not
leave home for less than 500.... But, a 4"
would not tempt me too much.
Regards,
Old 112

Duhhh Yes I know round from square must have had a brain cramp.
Anyway, this one is a RB But as you have mentioned it is 4" so probably less desirable than a 2". Beautiful gun however with original cardboard box and papers.
Thanks for the info

I guess it is all a matter of if one wants a carry piece, shooter or safe queen. My problem is I like them all

I used to have a short snouted 12-2 with a round butt. I owned it once, sold it, missed it, and bought it again.
The 2nd time around, I remembered why I sold it and then I learned something new.
1. I sold it the first time because it was the most inaccurate revolver I ever owned.
2. I re-sold it the 2nd time because of all the horror stories I had heard about the cracked frames.
The 2nd reason almost made me consider getting rid of my J frame model 38 (no dash) Airweight Bodyguard. The last thing I wanna do is crack the frame on it.
But I've worn it in my front pocket for so long (since October 2008) it's a part of me now. So I reckon I'll just hafta cross that bridge when I get there if ever it cracks on me.
I now carry a 2 inch model 64 as my primary.
It ain't gonna crack on me!
