Ltd edition 1985 Model 649 J frame snub....
Picked up this factory engraved Ltd edition unfired J frame 649 this year unfortunately without docs or cardboard box.
Although it is mentioned in SCSW 2nd ed. there is not much more info.
This one is engraved 1 of 100.
I have not been able to ascertain if its siblings had the same inscription of "1of 100" or if they were subsequently enscribed as 2 of 100, 3, 4 etc up through 100.
The SN# is no help with its 3 letter prefix code followed by 4201.
If they were subsequently numbered 4201, 4202, 4203,4204 ...I could see mine as the first gun of 100,
Otherwise each is 1 0f 100 and numbered 4001, 4101, 4201, 4301 etc...
Anybody out there have one of its siblings and care to settle the dilemma ?
Lasstly , Aybody care to place a conservative estimate on its value being a post 1982 non pinned .38 special?

Why was it a limited edition? Was that the last year they made the 649 before stretching them, and other Bodyguard frames into the new ".357 J" frame size?
I've always wanted a model 649 from around that era. My modl 38 no dash Airweight Bodyguard is from 1985-86.

I could be wrong, but wasn't the 649 introduced around that time?

I had to look it up to be sure, According to SCSW the .38 caliber 649 was produced from 1985 to 1998.
1985 100 marked model 649/1985 ltd production, (That would be this comemorative)
649 1985
649-1 1988, 649-2 1996 , 649-3 1997 , 1999 discontinued .38 special version. Picked up another 649 this week serial prefix BSU...

Yes, they were introduced in 1985. I had an unfired 649, serial # ALW140x, that I traded for a nice Luger, as I found the 649 (and 49) a bit heavy for pocket carry. To me, very noticeable compared to my model 38 airweight.
That 1 of 100 649 you have should be worth more than a standard 649, but I believe only to someone who wants one for a collection. Perhaps one day they will bring a premium over a standard issue 649, but who knows. Nice revolver though!

The model 649 is next on my "grail" list.
Here's the list as of today:
Model 649 chambered in .38 Special ONLY.
2 inch model 60
3 inch model 65.
2.5" model 66 (P&R).
4 inch model 66 (P&R).
Pre model 27 with a 3.5"
4 inch "Victory" model.
2 inch "Victory" model or PRE model 10.
Model 645.
I know, I know...most members here already have many or all of these and don't consider them "grail" worthy.
My wants are just kinda subtle. I'm not a collector. I'm a shooter.

Toroflow1, I agree with the 649 being a bit too heavy for a pocket gun, I have a model 38-2 airweight and was shocked at the difference.
Perhaps a scandium titanium version is in my future.
Of course the 649 is a bit easier to pocket carry than my luger, HA ha.
I actually just traded my DWM 1912 commercial for a model 586 and a model 28, with 4" barrels to a friend.
Glockemdown. thats a respectable order to fill.
Im curious about the 2" Victory though, Did Smith make a 2"or is it a conversion only piece?
I picked up a snub model 12 airweight recently that is really neat, I recommend trying one out if you like K frame snubs.
BTW, one of my biggest regrets was selling my NIB model 745 IPSC comemorative.
I have had my eye on a model 645 though.
Cheers

Actually, the 2 incher doesn't have to be a Victory and you're right...they probably never made one. Just a pre model 10 M&P would do.
Like this drop dead gorgeous beast!
Of all the short snouted M&Ps on here, I gotta say that this specimen of GF's is the epitome of stunning!
As for the rest of the list? Yeah...I'm sure it will be whittled on over the next few years. The only ones on there that I'd sell my soul for is probably the model 649, the 3 inch model 65 and the 3.5" Registered Magnum. The rest of them? If I get rich and famous. Otherwise...I'll settle for the stainless Bodyguard, the round butt M&P and the stubby N frame .357 Magnum.

1 of 100(also)
A friendly gunshop put this same gun away for me . It also says 1 of 100 . Last 4 on the serial # is 6295 . It has 3 dirty cylinders and the little inspection stickers are on the pristine grips .Got a box w/wrapper also , not marked w/serial # or info though . The etching on mine is gold filled though . I am going to try for some pics tomorrow or the next day . Not a shooter.......just a collector .
