Default 4" Model 29 serial number

I have a model 29 with a 4" barrel. It's actually a 29-3, but it has a serial number with an "N" prefix. How rare is this? I was under the impression the -3 models didn't have the N prefix. Thanks for any insight. Also, I have the original box and papers, and it's only been fired the factory test fires in every other cylinder. I've never shot it.

Its not rare. S&W finished off the N series of serial #s at N950000 or thereabouts in the mid 1980s, and the 29-3 variation was introduced before the end of Ns (in 1982). I had a 29-3 4" nickel with serial # N920xxx.

Thanks. I didn't really think I had a super great piece. Other than it's a Smith Model 29 . Anyhow, you don't know until you ask.
