Default Revolver id? New guy here with a new (to me) S&W......

I've been lurking for a while now and decided to join in. I recently acquired what I think is a S&W 10-5 2" (I'm not sure what the 5 means but that's what the previous owner said it was). I have been searching all over the internet trying to find info about this gun. Although it's not a rare piece I cannot find one that has a matte black finish like the one I posses.

Can anyone help identify this revolver? The serial # is C991xxx. It is in really good shape and I think it was made in the time frame that this forum covers. Thanks for your help and I look forward to enjoying the S&W forums.

The gun was made in 1967 and the -5 is the fifth engineering change implemented on the model 10. I think your gun was refinished as it should have a high gloss blue. Others can comment if there were flat blued ones made. My Dad's model 10-5 that I now have is a 6 inch barreled gun with the high gloss blue. You will also notice that my Dad's trigger and hammer are original and yours look refinished and chromed.

In 1968 they discontinued the diamond grips and my dad's didn't have them in 1968. So yours should have had them and were probably sold for good money and replaced with the later grips.

Dad's 10-5

Looks like Alumahide. It's a do-it-yourself finish that's baked on. Tough stuff. Will make a good little pocket gun.

Really nice gun - I've always loved snub-nosed model 10's. The finish reminds of Robar's Rogard, with NP3 on the internals.

how does she shoot?

Thanks for the info guys. Looking over the gun I can't tell that this finish isn't factory.....It was done perfectly as far as I can tell. Could it have been done professionally?

I haven't shot it yet...it feels perfect in my hand and I bet it will be a dream to shoot....I'll find out this weekend.

Does the fact that the revolver has been refinished have a negative affect on the value? I figured the gun to be worth around $300-$350 in it's current condition.

I have a Model 10 that was re-finished by Smith and Wesson in a Matte Blue finish that looks just like yours. A friend of mine bought the revolver as a police surplus, the finish was badly worn and pitted. Smith and Wesson reccomended the matte blue as they said they couldn't polish the revolver enough to make it look good in a gloss blue. It came out very nice, gave the old girl new life...

The re-finish cost was $170. When my buddy tired of the revolver, he sold it to me, and I am giving it a good home.

As a shooter I'd say no because it's really well done. For a collector probably yes but Model 10-5's don't have a lot of collector value anyway unless they are mint and unfired with tools, box and paper work.
