Default J Frame Grip Question

I just got my new Model 60-15 and have a question on grips. The model 60 is a J frame but the Ahrend's cocobolo J frame grips I’ve got don’t look as though they’re going to fit cleanly. Might just be my old eyes… Second question is, the rubber grips the 60 came with have one grip screw on one side and nothing on the other. Does that just back out like a regular screw and the rubber grips peel off? And do the wood grips with a screw on one side and the embedded nut on the other just install normally? Don’t want to start something until I’m sure it’ll work. Thanks.

The 60-15 you have is a j-frame round butt grip. Make sure your grips are for a round butt grip and not the older square butt grip.

Yes, the screw in the original grip just backs out. It is screwed into a hidden nut molded inside the oposite side. Seperate the grip at the butt end and pull each side scale out from the grip frame. There is a roll pin set into the base of the grip frame that fits into a hole on each side grip scale. If you seperate at the top of the grip, you bind the grip on this pin and risk tearing it.

Thanks Skeeterbait. The cocobolo's I have are from my 637 which is also a round butt. They just didn't look right against the 60 but as I said, I was just eyeballing them, didn't actually try them. I did see in SCSW3 a mention of the model 60 being reintroduced in 1996 in .357 mag and built on the "slightly larger J magnum frame." Never happened to run into that before. Anyone have any info on it? Thanks again.

The slightly larger J-magnum frame portion is the window in the frame and the length of the swing out cylinder that fits into it in order to accomodate J-frames chambered to fire .357 Magnums.

The grip portion of the frame is still the same dimension. Your round butt J-frame grips will fit any RB J-frame... your older .38 Spl holsters, however, may be a tad (slightly) smaller in the cylinder area due to the slightly larger (longer) J-Magnum dimensions. Barrel length will also be somewhat affected, the 3 inch barrel will be a bit longer than older 3 inch barrels... cuz the barrels also measure from the cylinder face... which is longer. But holsters are easy to find.

Oh yeah, almost forgot, the ejector rod is longer and has a (also longer) shroud. But then holsters are easy to find that will show off your fancy Cocobolo grips.

So, slap on those grips and let's see a picture of your M60 with some nice Cocobolo!

Thanks for the info, Yellowstone. Will probably put on the coco's tomorrow - I'll post pics as soon as they're on.

Methinks it'll get more .38 spls than .357s.

Not all round butt J frames are created equal.
I have 4 J's and when I interchange grips,
the back strap will stick out a bit on one and not on the others.
The same set of grips will be tight on the frame (no wobble)on one
and on another, they wobble a little, so I insert a match from a matchbook as a shim,
to make the grips tight as they should be.
S & W's must have a tolerance that is acceptable to them,
but makes the fit of replacement grips iffy sometimes.

Most J frame square butt grips will work fine on a round butt frame. I have a 60-15 that wears square butt grips from Pachmayr. I also have a pristine set of square butt combats from S&W, (old style original combats), and they are designed to turn a round butt into a square butt as well.

I see that SW has used a different type screw, sort of a star but not quite, to hold the original grips. Don't want to ding it up so it'll have to wait for the cocobolos until I can find a screwdriver to remove the screw. Anyone have the info on this grip screw? It's new, gun was shipped on 8/26/09. Thanks.

Yes it's torx. Don't use hex (allen). You need the correct torx driver.

Hey Raven,
I've started a "show us your 3" + M60" thread, toss a picture or two in there!
