Loose extractor rod
My 686 no dash with 4" barrel has the extractor rod loosen after almost every 6 rounds fired. I find myself tightening the rod with every reload. I am not the original owner and I don't know the history of the gun.
Also, on occasion, when extracting empties, the extractor star will not grab the casing and will push past it. This makes removing the empty rather challenging as it wants to hit the star before completely clearing the charge hole.
Is this something that can or should be treated with non permanent loctite? Do you think I should replace any parts?
Thanks.

A drop of blue loctite on the threads should solve that problem in short order.

Sure will. Just a drop to the threads and shake off the excess before tightening.

I have had several S&W revolvers through the years that shared this trait. Disassembly to a point where you can completely degrease the thread areas, then a small drop of LocTite should correct this for good.

I would add to the other comments that it is VERY easy to do serious damage to the revolver by shearing off the locator pins or bending the center pins. An amateurish solution is to use empty cartridges in the charge holes when loosening or tightening the parts. The real solution is to get the special tool from Brownells which makes extractor and center pin removal an easy job. Remember - with guns, it is all about having the correct tool for the job.

The S&W factory doesn't use locktite products on the extractor rod. You know why?
Because they tighten it down correctly. This means they use tools to tighten the extractor rod down.

You can help the extraction difficulties by holding the gun muzzle up and extracting straight down.

So with the correct tool it's just a matter of providing enough torque?
I'll check out the tools at Brownells.

Not everyone has Lock Tight or the tool on hand. Easy fix - get some nail polish and but on the threads. Wipe off with a baby wipe and put a little on it. If it come lose again get the tool or lock tight.
