You can change the front sight any time you want by driving out the two spring pins holding it in place. On a gun this powerful I wouldn't want a quick change front sight mounted on it.

Well here is my take on this, I know I'm 2 years behind the last post but new to the 500 game so get over it! ;-)

I recently picked up a pair of 500's, an 8 3/8 and a 4 incher. While I was in the market and doing research on these things I was really looking for the 6.5 model, oh well these two fell into my lap and here we are.

With reading a lot here and asking opinions I was set on keeping the 4incher.... BUT... after shooting them and playing with them both I really love the longer model. In fact I just traded my 4 incher for a 6.5 incher.Have not received the 6.5 yet ,should be here Tuesday.. cant wait and hope I didn't make a mistake.. I'll let you know.

Default A way to " Carry" your SW 500

YEOWZA!! 4 years, dang time flies by!

So yes I've had this guy for 4 years now, still have it, still love it! Great shooter , and with good control. I thought the 4" was too flippy, at least for me. The 8 3/8 was a bit front heavy but with a rest very manageable. This 6 1/2 incher does well, it will sit on a rest and is also ok off hand.

I've come up with a load I call a 500 special, its a nice easy load to shoot, allows the curious to shoot a gun they might not otherwise be able to and will still dispatch a pig or a deer no problems.

I have a cross draw holster that works well although its a bit heavy, I also had a custom front release shoulder harness made for it that I like rather well.

And I kinda like orange...

But your picture is not of a 6 1/2 incher but a 4

Almost ten years here, but...

Nowadays you actually have three options in the .500s.

500 Mag, 500 JRH or 500 Special (if you can find it; load it, if you can't)

I plan to get some JRH ammo and try it in my PC 500.

I've also noticed the Federal Fusion 500 Mag load is pretty close to a JRH load; should be great for deer.

Wow, $3.02 a round! Loading it is so much cheaper!

Even a load of Trailboss with any reasonably constructed bullet will be enough for deer with reasonable shoot placement out a 500 S&W using of the above mentioned cartridges.

500 JRH shoots just fine out of your 500 S&W, the accuracy may be slightly degraded.

The flexibility of the 460 and 500 does is not that you can shoot 3 or 4 different cartridges it is the fact that they can be loaded over a wide range with an equally wide range of bullet weights.

Handloading unlocks the true potential of these guns.

Good luck and be safe
