Default carry/shooting mods to J&G sales M64-6

I picked up one of the surplus 64-6`s from J&G sales,a round butt version. came in real nice cond but for some small dings. i cut the brl to 3" and cut in a slot for a partridge front blade. turned out ok. i went inside and looking at the hammer , i could see it never had a SA notch cut. it was not ground away, just never cut in. i matched up to an older K hammer and put a nice snug pin through both hammers and set it up in my small milling machine for square. I then set a carbide end mill to the depth and width of the old K hammer notch and running over to the MIM 64 hammer i cut the same SA sear notch as the old K has. after just a few swipes with a stone i reinstalled it into the 64. Bingo! ,i now have a SA notch for full cocking. although you have to start it DA and hook your thumb behind to full cock it back, it works fine. and no creep is preceptive. not bad for shooting in the dark to just copy an old hammers cut. was surprised it came out as good as it did. they must make all of them all real close over the years.
here is a pic of the 64-6 from J&G, post work. Phil

I hope you never have to lower the hammer on a live round without firing the shot.... Have you tried this? (without a live round of course) Seems like it might be really difficult.

well, i have had a few guns set up like this before. the idea for a bobbed hammer ( for a carry gun) is to make it a bit less likely to snag on something while drawing. but these guns were intended for duty and made for DA only, so they almost had to make the hammers without a spur. if you would try to thumb cock it it would just fall on a live round if you let go.
i like a bobbed hammer on some carry revolvers, but i also like to be able to shoot in SA mode now and then. yes, you have to hold the hammer back with off hands thumb and forefinger , pull the trigger and easy it down. let the trigger go forward ahead of the hammer. just always make sure you point in safe direction if you try this. i have seen a couple guys cut fancy bobbed hammers with "grab" serrations cut along the hammer sides for an extra measure of non slip gripping . its keep safety in mind first and always and point away from any non target.same as with any firearm while loading or unloading. i seen a hammer get away from a gun savvy guy with a 94 winchester, while easing it down it slipped. so it can happen to any firearm with a manual release of a hammer that is under spring pressure.
