Default Measuring trigger pull length

How do you measure trigger pull length? I have an M&P and want to measure the free travel, the "glass rod" travel and the overtravel (I think). If there are some standard terms or ways to go about it please educate me, thanks!

I use the terms "take up" and then the clean crisp "break". The over travel is after the "break" or when the hammer falls.

I'm into 1911 single action pistols & I never really cared about overtravel, as long as it's feels Ok shooting it. You need some overtravel, or there is a chance of it not tripping the hammer.

The take up is something that you have to live with and is a normal thing to get use to. You need some of this too, or the trigger may not reset.
